Fans of the original 1974 “Texas Chain Saw Massacre” know “The Last Chance Gas Station” as one of the most iconic locations in slasher horror films. And according to a March 30, 2016 article on Hitfix, they’ll soon be able to visit the famed spot for dinner, music, and a vacation destination.
The building, located in Bastrop Texas, is being remodeled specifically to appeal to horror fans that remember it as the cannibal cookery for Leatherface and his murderous clan in director Tobe Hooper’s horror classic. Businessman Roy Rose has christened the enterprise “We Slaughter Barbecue,” with plans to open in July 2016. In addition to serving barbecue, there will also be a stage for musical acts and hotel accommodations.
Rose described his concept in a 2015 interview with Austin news station KXAN: “We’re going to build a horror barbecue resort. We’re going to put cabins in the back for all the fans who want to come and stay the night.” Rose noted his passion for the project inspired him to move all the way from Cleveland, Ohio to procure the property. And another investor for the venture is horror royalty of a different franchise, that being Ari Lehman, who played Jason Voorhees in the original ‘Friday The 13th.’
Given Bastrop’s close proximity to Austin, known for its music and movie festivals, “We Slaughter Barbecue” has a potential to be a breakout hit for fans of cult cinema.
