If you are a regular visitor the town of Los Olivos you might spend most of your time on Grand Ave. Los Olivos continues to grow with more and more wineries. Try traveling off Grand Ave onto one of the side streets like Alamo Pintado Avenue.
Be sure to check out Tercero, their tasting room run parallel to Grand Ave; actually across the street from Corner House Coffee and Stafford’s Chocolates.
You will find a small bar with stools to sit down. They normally serve 5 tastings, Artistic Rhone Red & White Wines. The winemaker/owner Larry can often be found in the tasting room. Discussing his wines and winemaking techniques. If Larry is not around, your server is happy to discuss each wine with you.
He has a unique way to decant wine. Use a Science Flake or some people call beakers. If you are into bread, ask Larry about his bread making.
This is a white wine or red wine lovers delight. They have something for every palate. The price point on the wines are very reasonable for the quality of wines. With whites around 25.00 and the red average around 35.00 with a few of the wines a little higher prices.
The 2010 Grenache from Larner Vineyard is a delight. As Larry says it’s the most ‘power packed’ of the three releases. He does not mean highest alcohol. If you are a Syrah lover this is a great place to get your Syrah on.
The 2010 Verbiage is 62.5% Grenache (from Watch Hill and Camp 4 Vineyards), 25% Syrah (from Larner and White Hawk Vineyards), and 12.5% Mourvedre (from Camp 4 as well). Each component was fermented and aged separately for 34 months in older French oak barrels
Want a little good time with Mourvedre, this is the spot if you are lucky to hit upon the winery at the right time. It sales out fast.
Into whites you can try the Mourvedre Rose, also if you are lucky.
For whites try the Albarino, Roussannne, Grenache Blanc, or their Verbiage Blanc with Roussanne, Viognier and Grenache Blanc. Or for dessert there is the Late Harvest Viognier. It’s sweet but not that sweet, with the acid level high enough to not be syrupy.
You can also find a Petie Sirah, big and bold, noticeable but approachable tannins, and a touch of ‘funk’ to make it interesting. Cuvee Loco with 50% Grenache and 25% each Syrah and Mourvedre in French oak barrels for 34 months.
