A 17-year-old boy was shot in the face and killed Saturday in DeKalb County and a 16-year-old has been charged in the apparent accidental shooting.
The shooting happened at the Landmark at Banyan Bay Apartments on Meadowglenn Village Lane, according to DeKalb County police. Officers responded to the apartment shortly after midnight after getting a call about the shooting.
Investigators said a group of teens, ranging in age from 13 to 17, was handling a gun inside the complex when it went off, according to Channel 2 Action News. Family members said all the teens were friends or cousins.
When officers arrived they found the 17-year-old boy with a gunshot wound to the face. He died later at Grady Memorial Hospital. Police charged the 16-year-old who was holding the gun with involuntary manslaughter, Channel 2 reported.
The mother and brother of the teen who police said had the gun in his hands told the news station that the boy ran to his home, which was nearby, saying he shot someone. They drove him back to the scene.
Saturday afternoon a DeKalb County K-9 unit searched the back of the apartment for that weapon, the news station reported. It’s unclear if they found it. It was also unclear what type of gun it is and how it ended up with the teens. Investigators are also trying to determine the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
Sharon Clarke told the news station she woke up to the sounds of teenagers screaming.
“The guys said ‘Oh my God, oh my God,’” Clarke said.
Clarke told Channel 2 that she rushed upstairs and saw a 17-year-old boy suffering from a gunshot in the left eye.
“I was just comforting him and just letting him know that it’s okay and just to hang in there,” Clarke said.
Clarke, who is a nurse, started performing CPR on the boy while his teenage relatives were in the apartment.
So far, police have not released the name of the teen who was shot or the victim.
“I just pray that the man who got shot, that he knew the lord, and that he went straight to heaven,” neighbor Tim Clark told Channel 2.
