This year was a Valentine’s Day to remember for 834 high school girls thanks to their classmate Hayden Godfrey. He gave every girl in his school a carnation for Valentine’s Day, all 834 of them! This 17-year-old kid worked a few different jobs and scrounged up extra money in just about anyway he could to reach his goal of $450 to buy 900 carnations.
According to Askmen.com on February 12, Hayden grabbed 20 of his friends to help him with this big endeavor and these young men passed out flowers to every female at school. It wasn’t as if Hayden was scoping out a date with this event or trying to win hearts among his classmates because as he already has a girlfriend and one is very understanding.
She sounds pretty cool too because 18-year-old Lilyan Sharp said that what Hayden did was something special and this grand event put a smile on her face. The budding Casanova made sure that some of the money he made during the year was put aside so he could make Lilyan’s Valentine’s Day special too.
He got her concert tickets and is taking her to see “A Great Big World” in Salt Lake City on March 28. So why did Hayden do this? Well it wasn’t the first time he has randomly handed out flowers to classmates on Valentine’s Day, just this time around he got every girl in the school a flower of their own.
According to WGNTV.com, this Smithfield, Utah, teen first started handing out flowers to girls on Valentine’s Day back in his freshman year, when he only had 30 single flowers. Each year he would purchase more flowers than the previous year and this year he decided to go all out. Now that he’s a senior, he is going out with a bang and he will always be known as the boy who gave every girl in high school a carnation!
He said he could see the sad faces of the girls who were passed by on Valentine’s Day and he just wanted to make sure that everyone of his female classmates felt remembered on this day. There is something that tickles Hayden’s fancy when seeing the halls filled with girls, each holding a flower, that came from him!
He told the media this is something he’ll remember the rest of his life. He got a lot of thank-yous’ for doing this, he also said.
Update: Hayden’s mom spoke with the media about how her son put this venture together and why he felt compelled to do this. The website You Know Football, writes how Hayden’s mom conveyed that when her son “saw certain girls go home empty-handed, he was spurred forward to do something about it. Hence, the idea to bless all the girls in the school with flowers took hold.”
To see what a major effort this was, check out Hayden’s Facebook page and take a gander at all these carnations, which his mom said Hayden ordered three weeks in advance. He purchased the carnations from an online wholesale dealer.
Since the high school was closed for an administration day on Friday, Hayden and his friends handed them out to the girls on Thursday for the up and coming Sunday Valentine’s Day holiday, Vice Principal Kurt Hanks told the media.
Hayden’s friends not only helped by handing out the carnations to all the girls, but they also worked with the budding Casanova trimming the long stems. His mother also said that he worked and saved his money for a year and a half so he could do this in his final year of high school.
