Techstars is a leading company in the business of fostering startups. In December 2015, Techstars teamed up with Cox Enterprises and announced an “Techstars Atlanta Program” which seeks to nurture startups that are based in Atlanta, Georgia. The program will annually select ten startups that are working to produce a positive change in the interconnected world through social media, cloud-based data, predictive analytics and cyber security. Recently, Techstar representative David Brown, Techstars’ Managing Partner, spoke to the Examiner about this new program:
Meagan Meehan (M.M.): How and when were you inspired to start this program?
David Brown (D.B.): We have long been inspired by the robust entrepreneurial community in Atlanta. That, combined with Cox’s vision and dedication to the success of their community, led to a natural joining of forces.
M.M.: Why did you decide to base this program in Atlanta, Georgia?
D.B.: Cox Enterprises and Techstars share a common goal of catalyzing the entrepreneurial community in and around Atlanta, similarly to how Techstars has helped to strengthen startup communities across the globe. Techstars sees Atlanta as a leader in startup innovation in the southern U.S. with a dynamic startup community. Together with Cox Enterprises, our goal is to unify and rally the broader Atlanta business community around its startup community. We believe that great entrepreneurs are everywhere and Atlanta is no exception. It is full of successful business leaders, big brands and a wealth of tech talent that simply needs a way to connect – and this program will bring it all together.
M.M.: What kinds of businesses/services do the most desirable startups provide?
D.B.: Techstars Atlanta’s theme is: Life’s most important connections are happening in new and exciting ways. Social media platforms, cloud-based data, predictive analytics and cyber security are thoroughly interwoven in our daily lives. The industries of tomorrow – telecommunications, mobility, transportation, healthcare, and financial services – will need to aggregate and share vast amounts of information in creative new ways. While applications are open to all startups, the Techstars Atlanta program is looking for startups changing the interconnected world through social media, cloud-based data, predictive analytics and cyber security.
M.M.: How, exactly, does this program work?
D.B.: Techstars operates accelerator programs globally, and it works just like our others. The focus in this case is on connections. Thus, we have an incredible partner and mentors that are focused on this space in this particular program. We invest in each startup and make them part of our global ecosystem. In short, we provide investment capital, deep mentorship and an enormous network for innovators in this space.
M.M.: Thus far, what has been the most rewarding part of working with Cox Communications?
D.B.: Cox has demonstrated a great #givefirst spirit by showing leadership in their community. This compatibility of ethos makes working with them a pleasure.
M.M.: Where do you hope the program will be ten years from now?
D.B.: Startup communities are built over time. In fact, we like to say that it takes 20 years from wherever you are in the process. So, in 10 years, we hope to be well on our journey with 20 years to go!
M.M.: Are there any upcoming projects and/or events that you would like to mention?
D.B.: Applications are now open to apply to the Techstars Atlanta program which will kick off during the summer of 2016, with Demo Day being held in mid-September.
