More details have surfaced in the case of former Texas math teacher Haeli Wey, who was arrested last week, accused of having sex with two high school students. Court documents reveal that Wey, who taught at Westlake High School, in Austin, Texas, allegedly had sex with two teen students on multiple occasions during the past school year. She is alleged to have had sex with one student while on a trip to Africa, and that alleged victim claims that he stopped seeing her when he discovered she was having sex with the alleged second victim.
CBS News reported December 23 that Haeli Wey, 28, made bail this past week after having been arrested and charged with felony improper relationships with two students 17-year-old students. Although the age of consent in Texas is 17, it is still against Texas law for a teacher to have sex with a student. The Travis County Sheriff’s Office investigation into the matter began in October when a friend of one of the alleged victims allegedly saw text messages between Wey and the student on his cell phone. Police believe the relationships occurred over the summer and into the 2015 school year.
An affidavit attests that text messages on one alleged victim’s cell phone indicated a suggested rendezvous between Haeli Wey and the student. The 17-year-old told investigators that he met Wey at a summer camp and did not know at the time that she was a teacher at his high school. He alleged that he and Wey had begun regularly texting each other, that it was those texts that another student saw and showed other students. Wey is alleged to have then asked him to help stop the rumors that they were “hooking up.”
When asked by investigators if he was expected to have sex with Wey on a hike suggested by the texts, the teen responded that he did, saying, according to the affidavit, “a teacher just doesn’t hang out with a student to hang out.” The hike Wey planned at Commons Ford Park in Austin lasted about two hours. He alleged that he and Wey had sex after she set up a hammock while the two were on a secluded trail in the park.
The second alleged victim told police he met the Westlake High School teacher at a student ministry program in June. The teen told police, according to an affidavit, that Haeli Wey accompanied him and his family on a trip to Africa. It is there, he claimed, that the two first had sex. Upon returning to the states, he said he and Wey had sex ten more times, but he heard a rumor she went on a hike with the second alleged victim and decided to end the relationship.
KEYE-TV in Austin noted that Wey voluntarily surrendered her teaching certificate on December 15. The Eanes Independent School District issued a statement in late October, sent to parents and staff, condemning the inappropriateness of the teacher’s behavior. Superintendent Dr. Tom Leonard released promised “immediate action” once Wey’s case was reviewed by the school board.
A second statement was released Thursday following Wey’s arrest. It was noted that Haeli Wey was not employed by the Eanes ISD as of October 30, four days after the first statement was issued.
Upon her release Thursday, Wey was ordered by the court not to have contact with the two alleged victims. According to her lawyer, Larry Sauer, his client would likely not be receiving such national scrutiny if she were male or less attractive.
