According to Yahoo! Sports on Wednesday, Canadian Olympic gold medalist John Tavares of Mississauga, Ontario scored the game winning goal and had a multi-point game for the New York Islanders in their 5-3 win over the Tampa Bay Lightning. With the win, the Islanders lead the Lightning 1-0 after game one of the Eastern Conference semi-final series.
Tavares scored the game winning goal at 8:59 of the second period on the power play from Kyle Okposo and Frans Nielsen. The goal put the Islanders up 4-1 at the time. Tavares also notched an assist on a goal by Travis Hamonic at 5:44 of the first period that tied the game at one at the time.
Tavares, who won a gold medal at the 2014 Olympic Winter Games in Sochi, was one of four Islanders players that had a multi-point game. Shane Prince notched two goals, while Ryan Strome and Brock Nelson had two assists each.
This was the first time ever that the second round of the Stanley Cup playoffs started before the first round ended. After the Islanders beat the Lightning on Wednesday, the Nashville Predators beat the Anaheim Ducks 2-1 to win the best out of seven Western Conference first round playoff series four games to three.
