Take-Two Interactive owns both Rockstar Games and the 2K label and they went over the past quarter, while looking forward at what could be next. Quite a lot has happened over the past three months including VR getting closer to making its debut for commercial use, Rockstar Games’ Leslie Benzies leaving the studio and increased PS4 and Xbox One install bases.
Mafia 3 was mentioned as a game that’s gaining a serious amount of anticipation, however, Take-Two said more information about the game would be revealed “in the coming months.” Fans who remember, Mafia 3 was originally revealed during August of last year and was arguably the biggest surprise of Gamescom 2015.
There was no Mafia 3 release date mentioned, but it wouldn’t be surprising to see the game launch sometime during the fall of this year. PS4 and Xbox One have seen increased support from gamers and they have switched to digital purchases more and more as time has gone on. Strauss Zelnick, who is the CEO of Take-Two Interactive, talked about retail distribution versus digital.
“We are believers that digital distribution will continue to grow, but it is hard to project when that will be. Physical distribution is still a lion share of our business and we expect that to remain the same for sometime. Our job is to be where the consumer is,” Zelnick said.
Many publishers have seen increased numbers from a digital sales standpoint and that trend is likely to continue. VR is a platform that will begin to hit the market in the coming weeks and many are wondering how AAA publishers will or won’t support it. Zelnick provided some thoughts on VR.
“It’s our job to be at the front lines of everything that has gone on in the industry. We are doing some investigation and some R&D. The key thing is that to the extent that VR platforms becomes interesting, we’ll be there because we are always there for consumers. It is early for me to state an opinion on how it’s going to go,” Zelnick said.
Oculus Rift is going to be launching in the next few months and it’ll be interesting to see how well it does or does not perform, especially with the hefty $599 price tag it has. Recently, Leslie Benzies, who was a longtime Rockstar Games head, left the studio and Zelnick spoke about his departure.
“We’re really proud of the team approach that we have at our company. I can confirm that Leslie Benzies went on sabbatical in Sept. 2014. It’s our job to move ahead day and night without ever missing a beat. We aim to be the best place in the business to work at. I have all of the respect for Leslie and of course I wish him the best,” Zelnick said.
NBA 2K16 will be the best performing installment in the series history. It sold in more than 6 million units, which is up double digits from last year. 2K believes there is a lot more room for the WWE 2K franchise to grow and that’s evident in the company’s recent news of their partnership with WWE being extended.
Sid Meier’s has sold in nearly 33 million units in its lifetime and its latest installment Sid Meier’s Civilization Beyond Earth Rising Tide. 2K is expecting the following quarter to be driven by XCOM, GTA 5, GTA Online and NBA 2K16. Battleborn is currently slated to be launched on May 3 for PS4, Xbox One and PC.
