The horrific act of a beheading of a 4-year-old child has Taiwan citizens in an uproar, many who want the death penalty back on the books for the suspect. A mother and her 4-year daughter were walking to a Taipei a train station on Monday when a man grabbed the child and beheaded her instantly with a cleaver.
The horror of the little girl’s death unfolded in an instant right in front of the child’s mother and several witnesses, who tried to stop the man. The mother tried to save the girl, but the man was too strong and the others who stepped in could not over take the man until it was too late, reports Yahoo News on March 29.
The horrific act that they witnessed will stay with them the rest of their lives. CNN News reports this appears to have been a random attack by this man. The 4-year-old girl known only to the media by her surname, Liu, was riding her bike. Her family had a nick name for the child which translates into “little light bulb” in English.
As the mother and daughter were making their way to the train station, the child was riding her bike, which became stuck. Liu was just a little bit ahead of her mother when her bike wouldn’t move.
The mother saw the man walking toward her daughter and she thought the man was going to help the child, as she was still having trouble with her bike. This is when the man pulled out a clever and severed the head of her daughter. The mother told the media:
“I saw the suspect slashing my daughter with a cleaver. I immediately grabbed him but I could not pull him away,” she said. Bystanders rushed to the scene after hearing the mother’s screams for help. They restrained the attacker until police arrived.
The man was taken into custody by police and an angry mob grew outside the station where he was being held. When law enforcement attempted to transport the man to the prosecutor’s office for questioning, still with the blood of the little girl scattered on his face, that mob grew bigger and angrier. Even with police surrounding the man the crowd attacked him, the man kept yelling “stop beating.” The police had to bring him back into the station, as it was too dangerous to walk through the angry mob.
The death penalty no longer exists in Taiwan, but the debate is on to get it back, especially for a case such as this where a child is killed. The man who beheaded the child is known only by his surname, Wang. He is 33-years-old and has a history of arrests for drug-related crimes. The man has also sought treatment for mental illness at one time in his past.
The mother of the girl has asked not to be questioned by the media about the death penalty debate, as she has been bombarded with questions regarding this. The family requests that the media respect their time to grieve. The mom is also requesting the media stop posting pictures of her daughter’s body in the news.
