Karen Wilson, the owner of Sweet Sisters Bodycare, says she was interested in herbal products from the time she was four years old discovering interesting smelling plants, like sassafras, in her backyard and brewing concoctions with seeds, roots and flower petals. Her favorite “toys” included her perfume and chemistry sets.
It would be many years before she would return to her love of creating sweet smelling potions made of ingredients from nature. During those years she got a masters degree in developmental psychology and a teaching credential, moved to Whidbey Island, and worked as a teacher at the Waldorf School before getting married, having three children and becoming a full-time homeschooling mom.
When Karen’s daughters Rohanna and Terra were 10 and 7 respectively, they both wanted horses of their own. Karen told them that they would need to earn half the money to support their horseback riding. The girls earned money selling bookmarks, catnip felted toys and simple creams and soaps, made with their mom, from a card table under a small umbrella at the Bayview Farmers Market. Within three years the girls had saved enough money to cover half the price of the horses, their board and other expenses and along with their mom, expanded their Sweet Sisters booth to two canopies and a wide range of skin, hair and bath products.
Today, some 60 Sweet Sisters products can be found in select hair salons, spas, B & Bs and specialty boutiques, from Los Angeles to Alaska., and at the Bayview Market during their season which starts in April. Her newest outlets include Moon Juice in Venice, California and Moss Pink in Denver, Colorado.
Karen says her best sellers are hair and skin care products, including organic jojoba-based shampoos and conditioners, luscious face creams, plant-sourced antioxidant serums, artisan perfumes and aromatherapeutic body oils. “I just love creating products that feel wonderful, smell amazing and give your skin the nourishment it craves,” says Karen, who definitely feels that there is something special about her handcrafted body care line. Karen adds, “These body products include all my good intentions and passion added to the highest quality natural ingredients. I care about my customers and the wholesalers. I’m lucky be surrounded by such wonderful people.” She adds, “ I couldn’t do what I’m doing without all of them, especially my daughter, Rohanna, who still works with me four days a week.”
