After a somewhat crazy first two rounds, the 2016 NCAA Tournament is down to the Sweet 16. Here is a list of the betting odds for each of the Sweet 16 teams to go on and win the 2016 NCAA Tournament.
In addition to the betting odds for each team to win the tournament now, also listed are the original betting odds for each team before the tournament started. As you will see, for some of the teams the odds have dropped a lot while for other teams not so much.
Good luck to all the college basketball teams and especially the bettors in the Sweet 16 and beyond for the 2016 NCAA Tournament!
1. Kansas – 3 to 1 odds
After disposing of Austin Peay in round one and UConn in round two with little to no trouble, the Kansas Jayhawks are now the clear betting favorites to win the 2016 NCAA Tournament at 3 to 1 odds. Before the tournament started, Kansas was co-favored with Michigan State and North Carolina to win the tournament at 5 to 1 odds.
At this stage of the game a lot of the odds have to do with who each team has to beat to get to the Final Four. Kansas plays Maryland in the next round and if they win that they will then face either Villanova or Miami to get to the Final Four. That is not that tough a road.
2. North Carolina – 4 to 1
North Carolina has higher odds than Kansas to win it all at 4 to 1 mainly because the Tar Heels have to face Indiana in the Sweet 16. That is a tough match-up so Carolina’s odds are higher than Kansas. If North Carolina gets by Indiana the road to the Final Four is a bit easier in the Elite Eight vs either Notre Dame or Wisconsin. North Carolina is tied with Indiana as the two highest scoring teams left in the NCAA Tournament as both teams average 82.3 points per game.
3. Virginia – 5 to 1
Despite being a #1 seed in the Midwest bracket, Virginia opened the tournament at 15 to 1 odds to win the 2016 NCAA Tournament. The Cavaliers have dropped all the way down to 5 to 1 odds now because they play Iowa State in the Sweet 16 and if they win that then they play either Syracuse or Gonzaga to get to the Final Four. On paper, that’s the easiest road to the Final Four for any of the #1 seeds.
4. Oklahoma – 6 to 1
Oklahoma has also seen a big drop in their betting odds as they opened the tournament at 20 to 1 and are now 6 to 1 to win the 2016 NCAA Tournament. The Sooners will go as far as Buddy Hield can take them and it’s always a double-edged sword when you rely on one player so much. If he has a bad game your in big trouble but if he plays magnificently like Kemba Walker did for UConn a few years back you can win it all.
T-5. Oregon – 12 to 1
At 12 to 1 betting odds, Oregon has double the odds of any of the other #1 seeds in the 2016 NCAA Tournament. The Ducks opened the tournament at 18 to 1 odds. The road to the final Four is tough for Oregon as they face Duke in the Sweet 16 and then either Oklahoma or Texas A&M in the Elite Eight if they beat Duke.
T-5. Villanova – 12 to 1
Just like Oregon, Villanova opened the tournament at 18 to 1 odds and the Wildcats are now also 12 to 1 odds to win it all. Outside of the Big East, the only teams Villanova beat all year who were in the tournament were FDU and St. Joe’s and the Wildcats have already lost to Oklahoma and Virginia this season. Hard to see Villanova winning it all this year and 12 to 1 odds are too low to bet them here.
7. Duke – 18 to 1
Duke on the other hand does offer some value at 18 to 1 odds. Duke’s biggest problem is depth. If all the teams were limited to just 6 players each you’d have to like Duke’s chances but it doesn’t work that way. Duke opened the tournament at 25 to 1 odds and you can still get pretty close to that now and you are already two games closer to another title.
T-8. Indiana – 20 to 1
Indiana is another team that really offers some value at 20 to 1 odds. But the Hoosiers have to get past North Carolina in the Sweet 16. Indiana opened the tournament at 30 to 1 odds mainly because they had to play Kentucky in round two and they handled that pretty good. If you like Indiana bet them here because their odds will tumble if they get past North Carolina.
T-8. Texas A&M – 20 to 1
Could a team who really should have lost to Northern Iowa in round two really come back and win the 2016 NCAA Tournament? Texas A&M opened the tournament at 40 to 1 odds and now their odds are half that but they didn’t really show they are capable of beating anybody and now they have to play Oklahoma in the Sweet 16. The odds here seem too low all things considered to bet on the Aggies at this point.
10. Gonzaga – 22 to 1
Gonzaga opened the tournament at 100 to 1 odds and now they’ve dropped all the way to 22 to 1. Gonzaga will have a big height advantage over Syracuse in the Sweet 16 and basketball is still a big man’s game for the most part. It’s not impossible to see Gonzaga winning it all which cannot be said for all the Sweet 16 teams.
T-11. Iowa State, Maryland, Miami – 25 to 1 odds each
Maryland and Miami both opened the tournament at 30 to 1 odds and neither team’s odds have dropped all that much at the Sweet 16 stage. Iowa State’s odds, though, have really dropped from 60 to 1 before the tournament started to 25 to 1 now. Not sure that’s justified by beating Iona and Arkansas-Little Rock. Maryland probably has the best shot of these three teams at 25 to 1 odds.
T-14. Notre Dame, Syracuse, Wisconsin – 35 to 1 odds each
Syracuse opened the tournament at 250 to 1 odds and the Orange are now 35 to 1. Cannot see Syracuse winning the 2016 NCAA Tournament and their luck is going to run out sooner or later and they will have to play a legitimate team.
Wisconsin and Notre Dame were both 75 to 1 odds before the tournament started. Only one of them can advance beyond the Sweet 16 because they play each other in this round. Notre Dame is slightly favored and they should win the game if they make their threes.
