Outside of a doctor’s office, it’s rare that anyone gets an ultrasound–and certainly not of their face. But a new at-home skin gadget is changing that (just don’t expect a behind-the-scenes print out of your laugh lines or acne to ooh & ahh over).
Le Mieux’s Skin Perfecter is an easy-to-use beauty gadget that delivers 28,000 ultrasonic gentle vibrations per second to skin in order to cleanse and tone. The basic setting is for cleansing and exfoliating–and it even claims to extract impurities to unclog pores and help minimize breakouts. A second setting adds gentle but rapid pulsing for when you’ve finished cleansing and are on to your treatment phase. Simply apply your skin treatment (ideally in serum form) and set the Skin Perfecter to pulse mode, to enhance the absorption of the treatment product into your skin.
The key to using the Le Mieux Skin Perfector–or ensuring it’s working properly–is to keep your skin wet as you glide it over your skin. You can sort of think of it in the same way you need to have an ultrasonic gel applied for conductivity when you have a medical ultrasound–in concept. Here’s how Le Mieux explains how the Skin Perfecter works:
The Skin Perfecter provides 28,000 ultrasonic vibrations per second to gently cleanse, tone, and stimulate the skin while accelerating the absorption of skincare treatments. These low frequency ultrasonic waves create cavitation, which is the sudden formation and collapse of bubbles in a liquid. The impact of micro-bubbles collapsing on the skin surface creates micro-jets that increase the permeability of cell walls, transporting molecules through the stratum corneum. Low frequency ultrasound treatments have immediate two-fold benefits: 1) to deeply cleanse by softening pores, pushing out impurities and cellular debris, and 2) to enhance the delivery of appropriately formulated, topical skincare treatments by propelling products more effectively to the targeted area.
The question is, does it really work?
Beauty gadgets have become more popular for those seeking a way to put off heading to the dermatologist–particularly when it’s just brighter or smoother skin that’s desired. And they’re popular because they do give your skin that immediate after-glow that says “it’s working!” Of course, it’s what skin looks like four hours later that really tells the story. But with Skin Perfecter, not only is there that immediate after-glow look and feel, but over time skin does appear to be smoother, clearer, brighter (and maybe, just maybe, a bit more toned).
Given all that, even though the Le Mieux Skin Perfecter is a little pricey (it retails for $225), it may just be worth a try.
