Actress Lupita Nyon’go has been on everyone’s style list ever since her dazzling and dramatic first walk on the Oscar red carpet for her “12 Years A Slave” academy award winning role in 2013. Celebrity chic Nyon’go is even, just three years later, considered by many a style icon. How does the celebrity style of Nyon’go influence and translate into real terms for a Portland style maker? In the search to discover how celebrity fashion and style influence Portland’s population personal stylist Anandi Cade agreed to an exclusive look at the ever evolving local fashionista. Let’s examine Cade’s point-of-view on Portland fashion and style for herself, and her clients. Who’s your celebrity style crush right now and why?
Anandi Cade: Lupita Nyon’go because she is a fierce and intelligent woman. She is fearless in her style. The way she wears very bright solid colors, her use of exposed skin and she doesn’t shrink under criticism. I am loving the brightly colored cut out dresses she wears. She represents what I would love for all women to feel, strength and confidence in their appearance, accepting of one’s natural beauty and uniqueness.
What style trends are you excited about for spring? I love the classic white shirt with jeans. It’s a versatile outfit that can be styled casual or formal. You will definitely see more denim and chambray dresses which I can’t get enough of. Athletic leisure wear aka athleisure from yoga studio to date night is an extremely popular style that will be featuring floral patterns and pops of bright colors pink, coral, yellow, and navy.
What do you consider the biggest style rut most of your clients fall into? She tends to buy the same style over and over again in the same color. All of her clothes are navy, gray or black. She has ten pairs of skinny jeans and that’s it, no other denim styles. Once she finds a style that works she will keep going back to it and after a while forgets to try something new.
What are your recommendations on how to break out of a style rut without robbing a bank? Make an appointment with a personal stylist. Their expertise is free at many retailers. I feel it’s important to invite creativity and a new perspective into your wardrobe. Know any fashionable women in your day-to-day life that you admire? Connect with her. Ask her what she considers her favorite style or ask who her celebrity style crush is or where she likes to shop. A well-stocked closet will have a little bit of everything casual and formal, romantic and classic, neutrals and pops of color, solids and patterns, etc. You should never feel like you have to purchase clothing full price or brand new. They are always sales and promotions. Ebay is an excellent online source for used designer clothing. Consigned clothing stores, recycled fashion boutiques and vintage shops are easy to locate in Portland, though they do require some dedication, and digging to find the perfect pieces.
What are your five bucket list fashion ”Must Have” items for spring? A perfect pair of jeans (high-rise and flare are trending), leather skirt or jacket, gingham dresses, chunky high heels and a pop of color. Don’t forget to accessorize with a new handbag, shoes or jewelry.
What favorite song, music or band are you listening to right now and why? “Empty Threat” by Chrvches. I’m obsessed with this Scottish synth pop band ever since I first discovered them last year. Lauren Mayberry’s voice is phenomenal and my favorite song by Arctic Monkeys is, “Do I Wanna Know?”.
What event in Portland would inspire you to get decked out for? Portland International Film Festival! It’s in just a couple of weeks away. I think it’s the best reason to get dressed up. I can’t think of anything more fabulous, I mean what could be better than watching locals celebrate creativity, fashion and different cultures, don’t you think?
What’s your favorite item in your closet you can’t live without? My red beaded rose necklace from J. Crew. It always goes with everything. The pop of warm red is enchanting and engaging to the eyes, and it’s the perfect year-round color.
What new style tips this year are you sharing? Athleisure, play with dressing up casual athletic wear and never shy away from color, especially cobalt blue, goldenrod yellow and shades of purple from violet to lavender. Try denim on denim styling like a denim skirt with a chambray top, or a denim shirt under overalls. Keep it simple or add another dimension with a floral pattern or bold paisley.
