Some people find parallel parking a problem. Others find it difficult to judge distances when backing up to pull out of a parking space. But nobody will ever admit that they misjudged how far to pull up in their parking space (garage or otherwise) which ended up having the car “kissing” the wall with its bumper. For those people — who can be pretty much marked down as just about everyone at one time or another — there’s Striker’s Ultrasonic Garage Parking Sensor.
The Ultrasonic operates on a simple principle but uses high-tech to accomplish its task. You place it on the wall using the included double-sided tape and Velcro so that it faces out towards the open space that a car is going to occupy. Then mount the attached sensor to the wall also, but at bumper level even with the car.
Finally, park the car where you want it to be relative to the wall (and the sensor) and press the Set button on the Ultrasonic Garage Parking Sensor. So the idea now is to drive the car until it hits the device? That wouldn’t be any different than hitting the wall so there must be something else going on. That’s where the high-tech comes in, or to be more specific, the ultrasonic sensor. Having first installed a set of batteries, the signal light now “sees” the front of the car and alerts the driver to this fact through a series of lights: green means you keep going (and also points out that the batteries are functioning), yellow means to slow down and red means stop, you’re all parked now and can shut down the car, get out and go on your way. That’s all well and good, and since the sensor can handle a distance of 6″ on up to 6 feet, there’s no excuse for not tweaking the distance in a way that makes the most sense for your situation.
So to repeat this in the simplest terms, drive up to the Ultrasonic Garage Parking Sensor, follow the lights and stop when it’s red. That’s all there is to it. And while that would be more than enough to justify the $29.95 price tag, there’s the added bonus of a small bright LED that comes on for a short time as an aid in seeing where you are and providing illumination for leaving the area. Granted that this will deplete the batteries at a faster rate, but if the space where the parking is being done is short of light, that this addition is something to be pleased about.
The Striker Ultrasonic Garage Parking Sensor is designed to do a single task: to make sure the front of your car stays intact and “bumped” free. Asking anything else of it is unnecessary.
