The Doors tribute band Strange Days has always strived to provide authenticity in it’s performance of The Doors and Doors songs that this past Wednesday (2/17/16) it paid off when the band opened the sixth season of The World’s Greatest Tribute Bands.
The World’s Greatest Tribute Bands, which plucks a tribute band from across the country and features them playing live at The Whisky a go-go with a live audience and a concert experience. For The World’s Greatest Tribute Bands to feature a Doors tribute band as their first show of the season is ironic on several levels. First, The Doors were the house band at the Whisky in the summer of 1966, The Doors first came together as a band in the summer of 1965 and started playing regular gigs in the spring of 1966, and we’re speeding towards the 50th anniversary, in January 2017, of the release of The Doors first self-titled album.
Strange Days is a band that presents both the musical performance of The Doors as well as a theatrical one. Each member of the band an accomplished musician also dresses up and emulates each member of The Doors. On lead vocal is Jason Tosta and performing as Jim Morrison, Robert Carsten on guitar as Robby Krieger, Michael Jacobsen on keyboards as Ray Manzarek, and Derek Smith on drums as John Densmore. Carsten and Jacobsen, who started the band, have long sought to bring the full Doors experience to the stage. In an interview (read the full Doors Examiner interview with Robert Carsten) Carsten said, “A Doors tribute should honor the full band, and by doing that, transform the show into a full Doors concert experience. So, that was the vision for Strange Days – a cohesive band that honors each member of the original Doors in look, sound, and spirit.”
Fans who attended the show were impressed by the reality of the show and the performance of the thirteen song set that included “Break on Through”, “Love Me Two Times”, “People Are Strange”, “Hello, I Love You”, “Touch Me”, “Riders on the Storm”, “Roadhouse Blues”, “Alabama Song”, “Five to One”, and an encore of “Light My Fire”, and “L.A. Woman”. The live audience got a bonus song after the hour show was up of “Soul Kitchen”.
