The Stranahan Theater will host a quartet of Tony Award winning shows in the 2016-2017 Broadway in Toledo Series. According to Mark Edelman, president of Theater League, “The Phantom of the Opera,” “Pippin,” “Chicago,” and “Kinky Boots” will be offered to next year’s season ticket holders.
Edelman recently told The Blade, “The biggest show we’re doing is the ‘Phantom of the Opera’” and it is also the first show of the season with performances on Nov. 30 – Dec. 11. Phantom comes to Toledo as part of a brand new North American Tour and has been hailed by critics as “bigger and better than ever before.” The production, overseen by Matthew Bourne and Cameron Mackintosh, includes new exciting special effects including the show’s legendary chandelier. The gripping story of a disfigured musical genius who falls in love is set in the underground of Paris. It contains a memorable score with songs like “Music of the Night,” “All I Ask of You,” and “Masquerade.” A cast and orchestra of 52 will perform, making this Phantom one of the largest productions now on tour.
The hit Broadway musical “Pippin” contains extraordinary acrobatics, marvelous magical feats and soaring songs from the composer of “Wicked.” This unforgettable new production is the winner of four 2013 Tony Awards including Best Musical Revival. The musical tells the tale of a young man searching to find adventure. The musical explores mature themes and may not be appropriate for a younger audience. It features sizzling choreography in the style of Bob Fosse and breathtaking acrobatics as well as many Broadway standards including “Corner of the Sky,” “Magic to Do,” “Glory,” “No Time at All,” “Morning Glow,” and “Love Song.” “Pippin” will arrive in Toledo March 16-19, 2017.
Returning to Toledo April 20-23, “Chicago” has Velma Kelly, a nightclub singer who has been imprisoned for killing her two-timing husband. She meets hot-tempered Roxie Hart, who is awaiting trial in the same jail for killing her lover after an argument. Throw in fast talking lawyer Billy Flynn and “Chicago” has everything that makes Broadway great: a universal tale of fame, fortune and all that jazz; one show-stopping song after another; and astonishing dancing. The score includes “All That Jazz,” “Mr. Cellophane,” and “Razzle Dazzle.”
Wrapping up the season, “Kinky Boots” comes to Toledo on June 6-11, 2017. Loosely based on a true story, the musical follows the plot of the 2005 film of the same name. A family owned floundering shoe factory brings headaches to the owner until Lola, a drag queen, brings new life to the company with her unusual order for comfortable but stylish stiletto boots to wear while performing. Cyndi Lauber, pop icon from the 1980’s, has penned the songs for this quirky but clever show. “There is no show hotter than ‘Kinky Boots’!” according to CBS News.
Theater League will also present two season add-ons: the family-friendly holiday treat, “Rudolph The Red-Nosedreindeer: The Musical” and the Toledo return engagement of the hit Broadway musical, “Jerseyboys,” another Tony Award-winning Best Musical. “That gives us five big Tony Award winning musicals for 2016-17,” added Edelman. These two shows may be added on to a season ticket package or swapped for any of the other shows in the quartet of season performances.
Season tickets start at $140 for all four shows and a payment plan is available for members.
