Stone Brewing Co. (Escondido, California) recently announced that they will be making their annual release of Stone Imperial Russian Stout beginning this week.
As a bit of a departure from the brewery’s more hop-focused releases during warm weather months, Stone Brewing is set to release the malt lover’s dream that is 2016 Stone Imperial Russian Stout. This 10.8% ABV Russian Imperial Stout was first brewed back in 2000 and has actually changed very little since that original release. Stone Imperial Russian Stout is an opaque, deeply black brew that begins with a base of British black malt and British roasted barley to comprise the malt bill. The complexity of these grains provides this offering with a deeply roasted coffee aroma and flavors of “intensely bittersweet cocoa and coffee.” The selected yeast complements these flavors with notes of slight anise and fruity esters. As the beer warms and opens up, more roasted qualities and chocolate notes push through to delight the palate. The consistency of Stone Imperial Russian Stout over the years has made it a favorite offering among vintage beer collectors who seek to enjoy lengthy verticals to experience how beers develop with time. That said, Stone Imperial Russian Stout is just as enjoyable when enjoyed as fresh as possible.
“With each year’s release, we definitely work to make it taste fantastic on day one, but it’s also a beer that ages wonderfully with time and becomes more complex,” said Stone President and co-founder Steve Wagner. “This has become a recipe that we don’t mess with much or change dramatically year to year. I’m very proud of the reputation it has earned among craft beer enthusiasts.”
2016 Stone Imperial Russian Stout is officially available beginning this week and can be enjoyed via 22 oz. bottles or on draft at craft beer-friendly bars, restaurants and retailers. This limited offering can be found in Alabama and in all other markets where Stone Brewing Co. brews are sold. Believe me when I say that Stone Imperial Russian Stout is a must try offering each and every year, so be sure to grab a bomber to enjoy now and maybe another to put away to experience its development over time. You certainly will not regret it. Prost!
