On May 6-8, 2016, Steps Repertory Ensemble will present its annual New York season at Ailey Citigroup Theater. The Ensemble is the resident contemporary dance company of the Steps Beyond Foundation based at the Upper West Side’s Steps on Broadway. The Ensemble commissions a wide range of choreographers to create and re-stage new works on its dancers, all under the artistic direction of Bradley Shelver.
This year’s performances, on Sat., May 7 through Sun., May 8, will present works by Shelver including his Le Monde Est Fini, Pas De Panique, SCENES, and excerpts of She and Him. In addition, the program features Sidra Bell’s contemporary work Valse, which will be seen for the first time en pointe; RUST, by Sweden’s Julia Ehrstrand; The Legend of Ten by master choreographer Lar Lubovitch; and excerpts of Korean dance maker Jae Man Joo’s RECUR.
The weekend-long season will kick off on Fri. May 6 with the Steps Repertory and Guests Benefit. This one-night-only event will include performances by American Dance Machine, Jon Ole Olstad, choreography by Al Blackstone, and the staging of a Swan Lake variation by Elena Kunikova, performed by a Steps on Broadway student. Audiences will also enjoy performances by students of the Steps Conservatory Program and pre-professional students at The School at Steps, with staging by the legendary Leslie Browne. Proceeds from the Benefit will go towards dance scholarships and the Ensemble’s newly launched New Works Fund.
This season lineup certainly speaks to the collaborative-minded mission share by the Steps Beyond Foundation and the Ensemble. Artistically, Shelver adds, “This season there is a focus on light and dark, the ways in which we as humans need both elements in our life experiences of ups and downs. This program is both intimate and grand, housing technical prowess and its subtle gestures—it is for me a true definition of a repertory company.”
