On January 21, D.C Mayor Muriel Bowser declared a state of emergency in response to
new models which shows historic amounts of snowfall coming into the District beginning Friday afternoon. The mayor has also declared a snow emergency, and was quoted as viewing the impending storm as a “homeland security event,” that activates the city’s homeland security operations center.
Bowser said in part, “We’re preparing for a blizzard,” and “It is an extremely large storm.”
But the District dropped the ball when it came to being prepared for Wednesday snowy weather news agencies have talked about all week. As the snow began to fall, workers were getting off work and hitting the roads. The two inches or less that fell put traffic to an absolute halt. Trips that normally took a few minutes ended up taking several hours. One area resident posted on Facebook, a trip that should take 45 minutes, took an astonishing 8 hours. On Wednesday, D.C. Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) responded to an estimated 120 accidents, according to MPD Chief Cathy Lanier.
During the mayor’s Thursday press conference, she said, “I want to say to the residents of the District of Columbia that we are very sorry for our inadequate response. We believe we did not provide adequate resources at a time when it could have made a difference.”
Many residents recall this occurring a few days after Boswer was sworn into office.
Shaw neighborhood resident Zachary Henderson said, “If my mind serves me right, this is something Mayor Bowser said last year when we got our first storm of the year. All I can say is she’s consistent, if not prepared.”
So, knowing there’s a big storm headed this way, some residents have said, if they have a long weekend, what is there to do?
