It seems that Stacey Dash has yet again created controversy when asked about the trending #OscarsSoWhite on Twitter. The Fox News personality and “Clueless” star is still clueless according to many former fans who are fuming mad after Dash suggested doing away with BET and Black History Month. According to the Daily Beast on Wednesday, Stacey Dash has enraged many Twitter users with her solution to the Academy Awards’ lack of black actors receiving nominations for their work.
Dash was responding to an Oscars boycott that both Jada Pinkett Smith and Spike Lee have been very outspoken about since the announcement of the 2016 Academy Award nominations. The lack of black actors being snubbed yet again has upset many entertainers and movie fans alike. After the upset over the suggestion that actors such as Will Smith, Michael B. Jordan and Samuel L. Jackson should have received Oscar nominations and did not, Twitter went crazy with the hashtag #OscarsSoWhite.
Stacey Dash doesn’t think boycotting the Oscars is the problem, though. Instead, Dash thinks that black-centric networks like BET and even the celebration of Black History Month should be discontinued. Stacey Dash says that we are all Americans and that anything centered around any race should be done away with. How that will help make the Academy Awards fair to all deserving actors is unclear. What is clear though is that she has entirely missed the point behind #OscarsSoWhite and the choice to boycott the Oscars.
“We have to make up our minds, either we want to have segregation or integration,” Dash said. “If we don’t want segregation then we need to get rid of channels like BET and the BET Awards and the [NAACP] Image Awards, where you are only awarded if you are black. If it were the other way around, we would be up in arms, it’s a double standard.”
It seems that maybe it’s time to call a boycott on Stacey Dash, whose remarks are often outlandish and controversial. Of course, that really won’t do much good because the people she continues to offend don’t watch Stacey on television anyway. Another thing worth pointing out, since Dash obviously isn’t paying attention, is that there have been white winners at the BET awards.
What do you think of the #OscarsSoWhite controversy and Stacey Dash’s response? Should we really do away with Black History Month and BET in order to promote “inclusiveness’ or is there really a problem when award shows such as the Academy Awards fail to recognize minorities who are just as impressive, if not more than their white counterparts?
