St. George Greek Orthodox Church in Piscataway celebrates its 100th Anniversary on October 16, 2016, and many community and religious events are planned for the coming months to commemorate this milestone, as well as celebrate the progress of the Greek community in Central New Jersey.
From May 12-15, 2016, the church will hold its 43rd Annual Greek Festival. This much anticipated event draws over 10,000 people from throughout the state each year. The Festival offers homemade Greek foods and pastries, traditional Greek music and folk dancing, religious tours, and famed Greek hospitality.
Also in May – on May 2nd – the church will commemorate its patron saint, St. George, with special religious services.
The actual 100th anniversary of St. George Greek Orthodox Church is October 16, 2016 and to celebrate this anniversary, a special “Celebration Week” is planned, starting on Saturday, October 15, 2016. That night there will be a “Celebration of Life, Honoring our Legacy, Today and Forever.” This program, which will take place at Highland Park High School in Highland Park, NJ from 6:00-9:00 p.m., will recognize the church community with special presentations, an historic documentary, a photo exhibition, and Greek folk dancing.
The celebration continues on Sunday, October 16, 2016 with the 100th Anniversary of the Community’s first Divine Liturgy from 10 a.m.-12 p.m. at the church and Saturday, October 22, 2016, with a 100th Anniversary Gala Celebration at the Pines Manor in Edison, NJ from 6:00 p.m.-11:00 p.m.
“We are blessed to be part of St. George, where we have seen our Greek religion, culture and traditions entrenched within the surrounding communities and the state of New Jersey,” said John Lyssikatos, 100th Anniversary Committee Chairman. “These events will not only commemorate our 100th Anniversary, but will provide our community a foundation for its future.”
