For her first official visit to Washington this March, First Lady of Canada Sophie Grégoire-Trudeau made a splash with her all-Canadian style choices, including outfits by Canadian fashion designer Lucian Matis and numerous jewelry pieces by popular Canadian jewelry designer Dean Davidson, current CAFA nominee for Accessory Designer of the Year.
Grégoire-Trudeau impressed the world’s fashion community by bringing Canadian fashion to the international stage, making a point of showcasing Canadian talent during her visit with her all-Canadian wardrobe from head-to-toe. Davidson’s jewelry pieces played a big part in her stylish ensembles, proving he’s become a favorite of the influential wife of the prime minister.
Davidson explained it’s an honor and a career highlight to see his designs on Grégoire-Trudeau. “Sophie has a very authentic elegance and she’s become hugely influential in terms of her style choices. I couldn’t be more thrilled to see her wearing pieces from my collection, not to mention being included in a group of many other talented Canadian designers”, he said.
Upon landing in Washington, Grégoire-Trudeau was seen in Davidson’s moonstone geometric Origami Frame earrings (please see slideshow, picture 1).
At the official arrival ceremony, she sparkled in Davidson’s moonstone and white topaz pave Sceptre drop earrings (slideshow, picture 2).
For the White House state dinner, Grégoire-Trudeau made a style statement with Davidson’s Plaza ring in moonstone (slideshow, picture 3).
I met Dean Davidson in October 2012 during a fashion event in Toronto, when he was launching a collaborative jewelry collection with eBay Canada, and also celebrating his brand’s 5 year anniversary. Since launching his eponymous jewelry line in 2007, Davidson has become an internationally celebrated designer with his creations consistently gracing the pages of renowned fashion publications like Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar, Marie Claire and InStyle. Based in Toronto, in addition to now being available at Holt Renfrew and Simons locations, his unique designs can be found in over 250 select boutiques across the globe and seen on such high-profile clients such as Sophie Grégoire-Trudeau, Jessica Alba, Rihanna, Katy Perry, Olivia Wilde and Demi Lovato. Davidson is currently a 2016 CAFA nominee for Accessory Designer of the Year.
Every piece of Davidson’s jewelry holds its own story, designed to make the wearer feel confident and unique. Whether it’s masculine shapes paired with feminine textures, or architectural lines and contrasting fluid gemstones, the common thread found throughout Davidson’s creations embody an unexpected combination of minimalism with maximum impact.
All of Davidson’s pieces are cast out of high quality brass and then plated in 22 karat gold, rhodium or 22 karat rose gold. His unique and signature brushed finish gives a timeless and luxurious quality to his designs. Every season he chooses a different selection of gemstones to further enhance the collection. The gemstones are all custom cut and polished in India and complement his forward-thinking aesthetic. Davidson’s clean and tasteful designs are chic and versatile, geometric and fluid, and most importantly, current and enduring.
