Lisa Sonshine sat down for an interview with Celebrity Examiner Jae Monique to discuss her music career and inspirations.
Jae Monique: Tell us about your music career.
Lisa Sonshine: My music career started as an early teen, performing in community theatre, camp plays and cabaret shows in Toronto. In 2000, I started my first year at Sheridan colleges musical theatre program; the only thing I could ever have imagined going to school for. In 2003, I graduated and thought I was headed to Broadway!! And in 2004, Sonshine and Broccoli was born! The beauty of being a children’s entertainer was that there is Always work. We recently just released our 3rd album “It’s a beautiful day” and I couldn’t be more grateful for this incredible music career. I’m very lucky that I also get to delve into my Adult music performing in cabarets and private functions across Ontario.
JM: How did your music career get started?
Sonshine: My career as a children’s entertainer started when my aunt was taking her toddler kids to mommy and baby music singalong groups. When I graduated musical theatre, she said to me ‘why don’t you try to run these music groups.’ And that I did 11 years ago. My career as Sonshine from Sonshine and Broccoli grew organically. From our first album, then second and now the recent release of our 3rd. We have really grown with the kids.
JM: What inspired you to be a music artist?
Sonshine: My first inspirations were definitely Bette Midler and Whitney Houston. I have always belted it out from a very young age. I couldn’t imagine doing anything else in my life. Music feeds my soul.
JM: Tell us about Sonshine.
Sonshine: Where to begin!! Sonshine is an outgoing, nurturing, easy going fashionable gal!! Sonshine is my last name, so my whole life people have always called me variations of Sonshine. Being a children’s entertainer came very natural to me. I have always been told I have a special way with kids. I never forget a child’s face! I also take care of all the business side of Sonshine and Broccoli. My brain is always going, always creating, making sure that S and B are keeping current and growing always. S&B are an Entity in the Child Entertainment world. It really takes the time to know people and I love that I have amazing relationships with people in the business and people I work with.
JM: What projects do you have coming up?
Sonshine: With the launch of our 3rd album “It’s a beautiful day ” we have tons of shows and appearances scheduled. We have a tour happening for March break as well as a tour in NYC and Philly at the end of March. We are so excited for our 2nd year heading to Kiddie Comm, a kid’s conference held at WXPN radio in Philly.
JM: Do you have anything else you would like everyone to know?
Sonshine: I think we all need to relax a little, and trust the process!! One thing I Love surrounding myself with our kiddie fans is watching the excitement through their eyes. I always say, ‘I wish I got that excited about a (fill in the blank).’
JM: Where can everyone follow you on social media?
