Snooki Polizzi’s celebrity trainer Anthony Michael was the emcee last Friday night for the ‘Steps Together’ third annual charity event ‘Renaissance Runs The Runway,’ which is a nonprofit organization dedicated to inspiring our community to pay their blessings forward and support families facing a medical crisis. Celebrity trainer Anthony Michael emceed the event at the Bridgewater Manor, that raised over $20,000 through ticket sales and a abundant basket auction, helping more than twenty families while bringing awareness to the community.
It was stated on the Steps Together website, “Last night’s Renaissance Runs The Runway was a sold out event but the first people to receive tickets were the families we help. We believe that emotional support is as important as financial support. Our families would never treat themselves to a night out and are often in the greatest need.”
Courtney & Mike Newman are the founders of Steps Together. After meeting at the Philadelphia Marathon in 2004, they became training partners and soon married. During this time, they enjoyed five years of coaching the ‘Strides For Hope Marathon’ team which raised funds for The Cancer Support Community of Central New Jersey. Under their guidance, each participant trained to walk or run the 13.1 or 26.2 mile distance and raise a minimum of $3,000. Fifteen marathons later for Mike (PR Time of 2:36), and eight for Courtney (PR Time of 3:24), the birth of their second child officially made training and traveling to destination races too difficult and they semi-retired in 2010. Medical scares with both their children over the next 6 months brought to their attention the true cost of medical care and the importance of paying their blessings forward. They decided to combine their passion for fitness and fundraising by creating Steps Together and were honored to be selected as the People of 2012 by the Princeton Packet. Courtney was also named Somerset County Woman of the Year in the category of ‘Hometown Hero’ in 2015.
The Steps Together community and event calendar is ever growing due to the great need by so many deserving families. On Sunday May 1, 2016 Steps Together with by hosting another event called ‘100 Laps of Healing’ from 7:00am – 12:00pm in which a local marathon runner William Mather will be running a full marathon on the track of Hillsborough High school. It is stated on the Steps Together website, “On August 17th, 2014, Bill Mather ran 100 laps around the Hillsborough High School Track on behalf of the families supported by Steps Together. (It was actually 105 laps to make it a full 26.2 marathon distance.) He named his event 100 Laps of Healing and it was a huge success on many levels. The event raised awareness about Steps Together, awareness about the families we help, it also brought our beneficiaries and community together on the track all while raising $3,000 for our organization. Bill raised funds by flat donations and per lap pledges.”
“We held the event for the second time on April 12th, 2015. One of the initiatives for our organization in 2015 is grow the number of walkers on our team. We also wanted to share the message that we are a community of people paying it forward through fitness – all levels of fitness! What better place to do that than a track! No start or finish, no specific distance, no getting left behind. Just a community coming together to send a message of love and support to those in our community facing a medical crisis. We added a little wild to make it fun. That day 5,459 laps or 1,364.75 miles were completed by our community and together we raised $13,289!”
