Last night’s season finale episode of “Skin Tight” featured eight of the twelve people that had surgery to remove pounds of excess skin after a huge weight loss. It was up to the wonderful surgeons, Dr. Younan Nowzaradan who specializes in weight-loss and skin removal surgery and lovely Dr. Amy Bekanich and affable Dr. Mahlon Kerr to help them lead the lives they hoped for when they lost the weight.
This follow-up episode shows what happened to the morbidly obese people who lost their weight, but were haunted by the loose and hanging skin that did not return to its original condition.
Lauana is 31, lost over half of her body weight and was tortured by the skin that would hang all over her body. She met her husband while playing an online game. He was in Iraq at the time, and it was over a year before they met in person. She had her skin surgery performed by Dr. Younan Nowzaradan and his team. She underwent two surgeries and lost 34 pounds of excess skin. Her husband, Kevin was very supportive of her and had their wedding photos redone. Her previous weight was 336 and now is 155.
Megan is 34, and wants to give back after her weight loss, so her dream is to train others to lose weight. First, she must lose the skin that is leaving her looking as she did before the weight loss. She lost her weight via gastric bypass and lost 208 pounds in her first year. She thought she would be happy about the loss, but her loose skin is a major problem. She visited Drs. Amy Bekanich and Mahlon Kerr for the removal. Megan’s abdominal surgery removed the largest amount of skin in one operation, of the twelve people. She underwent a total of four operations that took 16.5 hours and removed 42 pounds of excess skin. Once she healed, she began training others to lose unwanted weight. She is currently studying to become a personal trainer, but now she is practicing by helping her friends. Her previous weight was 430, and currently she weighs 175.
Tim is 35, and his motivation to lose weight was his two daughters. He lost his weight through diet and exercise. The dream he had to be the best dad to his girls was hindered by the loose skin that hung from his body. Once he lost his weight, he finally showed his daughters his skin for the first time. He lives about fifteen minutes from the beach, but his girls are scared to go into the water because he never took them there. When he showed them his skin, they reacted exactly as he expected anyone else would and begged him to put his shirt back on. He saw Drs. Kerr and Bekanich for his evaluation and they approved his surgery. He had never had a stitch or been under anesthesia before his first skin surgery. The initial surgery was a major one and between the first and second, he lost 32 pounds of skin and received over two thousand stitches. Now going to the beach with his girls is a joy, and he will finally teach them how to swim. At his heaviest, he had a 58 inch waist, and now it is a mere 32 inches. Tim’s previous weight was 440, and now he is currently 206.
Brian is 33, and his extreme obesity was associated with multiple forms of addiction. In his case, alcohol and fast food were his crutches. When he met up with Jackie, who lived across the pond, she told him that he was throwing his life away while others were starving. He began a diet and exercise program that helped him lose the weight. They started a support group that has grown to 12,000 members. Drs. Bekanich and Kerr evaluated his condition, and it required four surgeries with a total of over twenty hours; more time in surgery than all the other patients. His recovery was difficult because he took only enough pain medication to dull the pain because of his history with addiction. With 35 pounds of skin removed, it was worth the pain. He wore a size 60 pants at his heaviest and now wears a size 38. Brian’s previous weight was 625, and now he weighs only 200.
Tanya is 34, and excess skin can keep weight-loss patients from achieving their biggest goals in life. For Tanya, it meant her desire to have a child. She had gastric bypass and lost 130 pounds naturally and another 80 after the bypass. She met Justin after she lost the first 100 pounds and loves his daughter Vivian. She was working out in the gym one day when she noticed in the mirror the guys behind her pointing and laughing at her. She visited Dr. Nowzaradan, but had to lose another 20 pounds before the surgery on her legs. She had three separate surgeries and lost 29 pounds of excess skin. After healing from her surgeries, Tanya and her husband have found a renewed spark in their relationship. Tanya’s previous weight was 387 and is now a beautiful 158.
Jeff is 22, and of the 12 patients, he was the youngest. He was eating 10,000 calories a day and caused him to be a shut in. He changed his diet and began exercising, but for many weight-loss patients, years of work building muscle are hidden underneath the excess skin. Jeff hasn’t worn a short sleeve shirt in public in five years, despite the stifling heat in Arizona. When Dr. Nowzaradan examined him, he determined that he would require two surgeries, which removed 30 pounds of skin. His first surgery took nine hours alone to complete. He was finally able to walk into a store and buy clothes. His previous weight was 600 pounds, and currently he weighs 255.
Ariel is 23; her dream is to be a wife and mother, but her excess skin held her back in relationships. She has been a prisoner in her own body since losing weight. She underwent weight-loss surgery and changed her lifestyle. In just 18 months, she lost 260 pounds but when she takes off her clothes, it is dramatic. Her loose skin is all over her body, erasing her confidence. Dr. Mahlon Kerr evaluated her and assessed that she required breast implants and belly to be removed of the excess skin. She lost 43 pounds of excess skin; the most of all twelve patients. She now can wear a form-fitting dress and go on dates. Her previous weight was 400, and now she weighs 153.
Derek is 34 and losing the excess skin was the only way to take his dating relationships to the next level. He established his own diet plan and exercise routine and lost 200 pounds. Derek and his girlfriend Reyonday spent most of their dating time working out in the gym or running together. Dr. Nowzaradan saw that his excess skin was mostly in his chest, stomach and upper thighs. He required three operations for a total of 23 pounds of excess skin removed. Reyonday was there with him throughout the entire process. His previous weight was 500, and he now weighs 295, with Reyonday right by his side as seen on this episode of “Skin Tight.”
