Wednesday night’s episode of “Skin Tight,” featured two people who both lost a massive amount of weight. Unfortunately, their skin was stretched so much, that when the fat under their skin was gone, they were left with excessive extra skin that would not go away. Each week this show will feature two people that had surgery to remove pounds of excess skin after a huge weight loss. Whatever way they lost the weight; it is now up to the wonderful surgeons, Dr. Younan Nowzaradan who specializes in weight-loss and skin removal surgery and lovely Dr. Amy Bekanich to help them lead the lives they hoped for when they lost they lost the weight. This episode features the journeys of “Melissa and Jeff.”
Melissa is 34 and lost 235 pounds of fat from her body. She feels ugly and cannot look in the mirror. She lives in Vacaville, California and avoided the scale her entire life. The only time she was weighed was at the doctor’s office. Two and a half years ago, she weighed 425 pounds. She led a sedentary life, from work to the sofa to watch television. One day after seeing her weight, she went to the gym four days a week, she lost the weight by taking control of her weight by diet and exercise. She expected her embarrassment to be over once she lost the weight, but she still has the horrible memories of her size and being around people is adding stress to her life, she did not expect.
Jeff feels like a freak and looks in the mirror and sees his failures. He lives in Mesa, Arizona and at 23, he weighs 275 and at 600 pounds, he became a shut-in until the day he decided to change. He went to the gym and did it on his own. He has skin in places he did not think was possible. He struggles every day to hide his loose skin. He usually wears several layers of clothes to hide the skin.
On day one, Melissa went to Austin, Texas to see Dr. Amy Bekanich, who along with Dr. Kerr, who decided she would require two surgeries for her needs.
On day one, Jeff went to Houston, Texas to see Dr. Younan Nowzaradan for his evaluation. Along with Dr. Mohsen Hoiabri, they understand what weight loss can do to extremely obese people and will be doing the chest and arms first. It is impossible to do all the surgery at once, as skin removal surgery is very painful. Because of Jeff’s issues with relationship fears, he is seeing a therapist to deal with his issues. Dr. Santhi Periasamy heard his story about how he had to cover up his body that caused him so much shame.
On day ten, Melissa and Dave went swimming. He knows how she feels about her excess skin and cannot wait until it is a memory.
On day fourteen, Melissa went to the hospital to have her breast implants and skin removed. She lost twenty pounds of excess skin and was shown the large container of skin that was removed.
On day twenty-eight, Jeff was ready for his first surgery for his chest and arms. The surgery is complicated, but went well. After he heals, they will do the surgery on his stomach.
At month two, Melissa’s recovery has been hard, and she needs help even to sit up, but Dave is helping, and she is recovering. At three months, she is back to the hospital for the surgery on her arms, back and inner thigh. They must be careful because of her varicose veins in her legs. She lost twelve pounds of excess skin this time.
Jeff, at month three, is in Houston awaiting his next surgery. He decided to stay at a hotel and heal.
Melissa is having problems with her legs and goes to the hospital in Houston to see Dr. Nowzaradan, who specializes in difficult cases. He took her to surgery immediately. He removed a hematoma and extra fluid from her leg. He stated that she may need another surgery for skin removal before she is completely done but for now, she must heal from the second one.
At month three, Jeff is recovering from home, and he feels good. He looks forward to his next surgery to remove the rest of the skin. At month four, he is back in the hospital for a 360-degree body lift. Starting with his back and around to his stomach, the skin will be drawn upward and is much more complicated than the first one. Twenty more pounds of skin were removed.
At month four, back at home, Melissa still has the drain, and it continues removing excess fluid. She is returning to Dr. Nowzaradan to see if she requires more surgery, and she was admitted. She knew it would not be easy, but she wants the body she dreamed about.
At month five, Melissa was still in the hospital with several drains in her body. She hopes to go home, but she will have to wait at least two months before she can work out.
At month seven, Jeff has lost 355 pounds with a skin loss of thirty pounds. Tonight it is time to show his family and friends how well he looks. His confidence level is boosted, and his stomach is flat again. He is back to the gym and bought clothes that looked great on him.
At month seven, Melissa is in Houston to see Dr. Nowzaradan again. She has come a long way, but her thighs still may require surgery. She wants to get back to the gym and try to lose a bit more weight she gained while she was laid up. If the exercise does not help her thighs, she will be back to see Dr. Nowzaradan.
At month eight, Melissa has lost a total of 274 pounds and thirty-nine pounds of skin. Her self-confidence is back, and she feels beautiful now. David put a birthday party together for her, and her family and friends were thrilled to see that she has a figure with curves.
At month eight, Jeff has changed on the inside as well on the outside. Now all he wants to do is put himself out there. He knows that people are no longer judging him for how he looks on this episode of “Skin Tight.”
