Wednesday night’s episode of “Skin Tight,” featured two people who both lost a massive amount of weight. Unfortunately, their skin was stretched so much, that when the fat under their skin was gone, they were left with excessive extra skin that would not return to its original place.
Each week this show will feature two people that had surgery to remove pounds of excess skin after a huge weight loss. Whatever method they used to lose the weight; it is now up to the wonderful surgeons, Dr. Younan Nowzaradan who specializes in weight-loss and skin removal surgery and lovely Dr. Amy Bekanich to help them lead the lives they hoped for when they lost they lost the weight. This episode features the journeys of “Lindsey and Derek.”
Lindsey is 29 and lost 140 pounds of fat from her body. She struggled with her weight her entire life. She lives in Chicago, Illinois and was taunted and tormented the majority of her life, leaving her depressed and feeling like a loser and without friends; food was her only friend. Her mother is not overweight and knew her life was out of control along with her weight that continued to climb. In 2009, she gave her life up to the Lord and found a group that helped each other. She joined a gym and got a nutritionist. She still struggles, and the loose skin was something she never expected. She has loose skin all over her body that affects her self-esteem.
Derek is 34 and lost 230 pounds lives in Ottawa Lake, Michigan. He has so much excess skin that reminds him of his 500 pound former frame. He wants to become a policeman. He established his own diet and fitness plan. He worked out six days a week, but the skin did not go away. He has done everything he could on his own, and now it is up to the surgeon to help him achieve his ultimate goal.
On day one, Lindsey was in Austin, Texas at Synergy Plastic Surgery, where she saw Dr. Mahlon Kerr. He examined her and determined she needed a horizontal and vertical fleur de leis abdominoplasty first. For the second stage, they will address her arms, legs and breasts.
On day one, Derek was in Houston, Texas visiting Dr. Nowzaradan. After examining him, the doctor discovered two abdominal hernias that must be addressed along with the skin removal on his stomach and back. The second surgery will address the lower back.
On day four, Lindsey continues to blog about her weight-loss journey. She encourages people to live their full lives, but she feels that by not disclosing her problem with loose skin, she is not giving the complete story. On day fourteen, she is prepped for surgery as her mother waits for the news. Drs. Kerr and Bekanich were able to remove twelve pounds of excess skin.
On day fifteen, Derek is in Houston with his girlfriend who will be with him during surgery. On day eighteen, he is ready for the surgery that will repair his hernias, remove skin from his stomach, back and his chest. They were able to remove fifteen pounds of excess skin and repair both hernias, especially the largest one which had to be watched carefully.
At month one, Lindsey is in Virginia Beach, Virginia where she grew up. She is staying with her mother because she needs help. She was not prepared for the post-operative care and her incision opened, and she never expected to see so many holes in her body. Exercise has been a mainstay of her life, and she was not able to do it. She is also having anxiety problems about her next surgery and hopes it is all worth it.
At month two, Derek is back home in Michigan. It is difficult for him to relax, but looking forward to his next surgery.
At month two, Lindsey is in Austin again for the largest part of the surgery. She is having implants in her breasts to make up for the tissue loss. Her arms and legs are finished with eight pounds of lost skin.
At month four, Derek is on a date with his beautiful girlfriend and appreciates all she has done for him, both mentally and physically.
At month four, Lindsey is worried about getting heavy again because she cannot continue with her strict routine yet. Being home with her mother, she is surrounded with her old triggers.
At month four, Derek is seeing the doctors again for his consultation prior to being approved for the second surgery. He still has drains from the first surgery, but is approved for the second.
At month five, Lindsey has gained weight and reverted back to some of her old ways. She needs her friends and support group.
At month five, Derek is ready for his second procedure, which removed eight more pounds of excess skin from his thighs.
At month six, Lindsey is disappointed that she has gained about forty pounds from lack of exercise while back in Virginia Beach.
At month six, Derek is finished with surgeries, and Dr. Nowzaradan wishes him luck going home and reminds him to stay in touch.
At month seven, Lindsey’s total weight loss is 120 pounds with twenty pounds of excess skin removed. She is back to her gym with her besties. When they saw her, they were thrilled and her mom knew how much she needed the friendship. She will lose the weight again and be the person she wanted to be.
At month eight, Derek’s total loss was 253 pounds with 23 pounds of excess skin taken away. That night a celebration of the new Derek was held, and his family and friends were thrilled at his accomplishments. His last suit was a size 70, and now he can buy clothing from a store and walk out with them. He is a confident and beautiful person and cannot wait to become a policeman.
At month eight, Lindsey is still in Virginia Beach and now recovered. Her mother has been an awesome inspiration. She is back to working out and loves the gym and is looking forward to a new life for herself on this episode of “Skin Tight.”
