Dare to do what you have never done before. Dare to be challenged and go to depths that you could never imagine. Many a diver’s bucket list is comprised of one of the top 5 dive sites in the world, the Silfra experience in Iceland. It simply does not get any more amazing than this. Both divers and snorkelers can equally fulfill a dream, below and on top of the water. One of the most well-known and safest ways to take it all in is to go through DIVE.IS (a PADI 5 Star Dive Center). To dive the Silfra, you must be open water certified, be physically fit, over 18 years old and you must not be pregnant.
What exactly is Silfra? In easy terms, it can be defined as the fissure between the North American and Eurasian continents. Upon entering the pristine water, clean enough to drink, the visibility stretches down to 100 meters or 328 feet. Wearing a dry suit is a pre-requisite in addition to warm underclothes. This is because the water temps hover at around 35 – 39 degrees Fahrenheit all year round, right near the freezing mark. Unlike the Caribbean or Red Sea or some of the other dive destinations, Silfra doesn’t really have any fish to identify, although there are some trout in one of the lakes in the area. This experience is all about looking at the unbelievable scenery that surrounds you.
The thrill of this dive is the ability to descend right into where the two continental plates converge and drift apart approximately 2 centimeters per year. The water is so crystal clear because it is filtered through porous underground lava for a time frame of 30-100 years. After that time, it reaches the north end of what is known as Thingvellir Lake, seeping out from underground wells.
The beauty of working with DIVE.IS to make your diving experience even greater, is that they offer many customized tours to satisfy your diving desires. Divers arrive on site and get suited up in their dry suits (provided by the dive operation) and have the ability to reach a maximum depth of 59 feet. The color scape that is encountered is unlike anything you could ever imagine. The bright green ‘troll hair’ imaginatively dances on air, reaching up to the water’s surface, in a most breathtaking manner.
In order to live the dream in its entirety, Silfra is usually done in a specific sequence order. Begin the dive in the “Big Crack”, then view the rock formations of outstanding color in “Silfra Hall.” Move on to enter “Silfra Cathedral”, the best and most memorable portion of the entire journey. It is the grandest part of the fissure. Then, reflect on all the beauty that you have just witnessed as you enter “The Lagoon” where the clearness of the water continues to astound you.
If you choose to snorkel, float on top of the water in a dry suit that will be provided by DIVE.IS, taking it all in from above.
The National Park Thingvellir has been declared a UNESCO WORLD HERITAGE SITE both for its cultural and historical significance as well as natural and geological uniqueness. The Golden Circle Day Tour is an opportunity to further explore Thingvellir on land. For land bound friends or family accompanying you on your tour, the area around Silfra is full of lovely walking trails that lead through this fascinating place. So there is plenty to do for divers and non-divers.
