“Sicario” debuted at No. 1 for movies on demand from Jan. 4 to Jan. 10, 2016, according to Rentrak. In the lawless border area stretching between the U.S. and Mexico, an idealistic FBI agent (played by Emily Blunt) is enlisted by an elite government task force official (played by Josh Brolin) to aid in the escalating war against drugs. Led by an enigmatic consultant with a questionable past (played by Benicio Del Toro), the team sets out on a clandestine journey forcing Kate to question everything that she believes in order to survive. Most critics liked “Sicario,” but the movie under-performed at the box office.
“The Visit” debuted at No. 2. The terrifying story of a brother and sister who are sent to their grandparents’ remote Pennsylvania farm for a week-long trip. Once the children discover that the elderly couple is involved in something deeply disturbing, they see their chances of getting back home are growing smaller every day. Written and directed by M. Night Shyamalan. “The Visit” got mostly positive reviews, and the movie was a solid hit at the box office.
“The Perfect Guy” dropped from No. 1 to No. 3. After a painful breakup, successful lobbyist Leah Vaughn (played by Sanaa Lathan) jumps into a passionate relationship with a charming stranger (played by Michael Ealy). When her ex-boyfriend (played by Morris Chestnut) resurfaces in her life she has to figure out who she should trust and who she should fear. Also starring Charles S. Dutton, Rutina Wesley and Kathryn Morris. “The Perfect Guy” received terrible reviews from critics, but the movie was a sleeper hit.
“Ted 2” fell from No. 3 to No. 4. Newlywed couple Ted and Tami-Lynn want to have a baby, but in order to qualify to be a parent, teddy bear Ted will have to prove he’s a person in a court of law. Starring Mark Wahlberg and Amanda Seyfried. “Ted 2” got mostly negative reviews from critics and did mediocre business at the box office.
“Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials” held steady at No. 5. In this next chapter of the epic “Maze Runner” saga, Thomas (played by Dylan O’Brien) and his fellow Gladers face their greatest challenge yet: searching for clues about the mysterious and powerful organization known as WCKD. Their journey takes them to the Scorch, a desolate landscape filled with unimaginable obstacles. Teaming up with resistance fighters, the Gladers take on WCKD’s vastly superior forces and uncover its shocking plans for them all. Most critics gave mixed reviews to “Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials,” which did average business at the box office.
Also noteworthy: The drama “The Walk” (starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt) debuted at No. 8.
