In Miami, Florida, a severely neglected two-year-old German shepherd dubbed Tucker, is already feeling better and is eager to make friends with everyone he meets at the VCA Animal Hospital, reports CbsLocalNews.
On Friday, Tucker’s veterinarian, Dr. David Tucker says Tucker will heal, but it’s going to be a long and expensive road; a labor of love, Cindy Newton with SHARE -Shepherd Help and Rescue Efforts has graciously accepted.
On April 19, a photo of Tucker was posted on the Urgent Dogs of Miami Facebook page showing a photo of the emaciated dog with severe demodex mange. Volunteers told the dog’s story stating he is part of a potential cruelty investigation. His medical evaluation from the Miami-Dade Animal Shelter included the following information:
“Emaciated with a body condition score of 1/9 with severe, diffuse loss of muscle mass, no discernible body fat, and ribs, lumbar vertebrae, pelvis bones, and all bony prominences evident from a distance. The dog is suffering from severe, generalized canine demodicosis with generalized alopecia/erythema/lichenification/pyoderma. Several areas of the skin are so severely affected that the skin is cracked and bleeding…”
In addition, all four paws were infected, as well as his ears and eyes. Two large open wounds at his hips were also both infected. Emergency care was given by the shelter which included bathing, cleaning and pain medication. As Tucker maintained a good appetite, the shelter continued to send out notices hoping an approved organization would help this young dog. Advocates joined in to help and shared the dog’s story and pledged funds for an approved rescue organization to help. And that’s when SHARE stepped forward.
Dr. Shapiro stated Tucker had to have been in a significant amount of pain, and the pressure sores were a result of the dog having been confined and lying in one spot for long periods of time. Oddly enough, Tucker isn’t afraid or timid as one would believe an abused or neglected dog might be. Now, however Tucker will never have to worry about being hurt again. He will need several operations to repair the damage from his deep wounds, but will surely make someone a special companion one day.
To help with Tucker’s very expensive recovery, donations can be made here. For local people who want to help, Tucker is in immediate need of soft blankets and an orthopedic dog bed. If you can help, contact the rescue.
