Seventeen bowlers have qualified for the Week 11 conclusion to the series of King Of Gulf Gate scratch sweepers at AMF Gulf Gate Lanes, and more than $500 in prize money will be up for grabs in next Tuesday’s (Jan. 12) finale.
The field of 17 eligibles all met the criteria of having competed in a minimum six of the 10 regularly scheduled events, and the final showdown will take place, with Tuesday’s practice beginning at 6:50 p.m.
In the most-recent (Jan. 5) sweeper, Jesse Hawver became a two-time champion when he defeated Mike Thompson by a score of 236-213 in the title game. Hawver’s game included a pair of four-baggers, the second of which finished the game, enabling him to pull away after leading by only a single pin with two frames to go.
In the three-game scratch qualifying, Hawver rolled scores of 181, 194 and 237 for a 612 series, and he was the only entrant to finish on the “plus” side of a 200 average. Mike Clark became the second seed with a 579 series on games of 179, 212 and 188, while Thompson was third with a 574 set on scores of 173, 238 and 163.
After the cut to three players, Hawver and Thompson advanced to the finale with identical scores of 214, while Clark was eliminated with a 174. Hawver suffered two open frames, but he picked up the pace with a double and turkey, while Thompson began the game with four consecutive strikes.
John Thompson was the top performer in the series, with four titles under his belt, while Hawver and Ronnie Hayes won two each. The other weekly champions were Jason Ferrill and Scott Kaplan.
