Brewery Ommegang (Cooperstown, New York) announced this week that Seven Kingdoms Hoppy Wheat Ale, the latest offering in the Game of Thrones series from the brewery and HBO Global Licensing, is scheduled for release in the coming spring.
Seven Kingdoms Hoppy Wheat Ale is a hybrid offering that combines qualities of both a traditional Belgian-style Wheat Ale and a hop-forward American ale. This offering starts with a base of oats, pilsner, and white and red wheat malts, and then it sees a generous hopping with Bravo, Centennial, Citra, Cascade, and Columbus hops. This recipe yields aromatic nuances that are floral, citrusy with a touch of passion fruit and slightly herbal. The flavor experience displays notes of tart orange, lemon, wheat maltiness, and a lingering hop bitterness. Ommegang’s house yeast also contributes to the flavor with notes of banana, ripe fruit, and spicy phenols. Just a bit of sugar was used to lighten the body, and the overall mouthfeel of the beer rounds off to be “smooth and silken” thanks to the use of the oats and wheat. Once poured, you can expect to find a 6.9% ABV brew that rests in your glass as a “hazy pale yellow with a thick cap of pure white foam.”
“We love bringing as much inspiration, thoughtfulness and creativity to the Game of Thrones beers as we can,” said Mike McManus, Innovation Manger at Brewery Ommegang. “This last season, the imaginativeness of the show was pretty astounding so we aimed for a beer that could hope to match that. A fusion of two wonderful styles was an idea that really excited our team.”
Brewery Ommegang has scheduled Seven Kingdoms for release in March of 2016, and it will be available in Alabama and throughout the brewery’s distribution area. You can expect to find this one at craft beer-friendly retailers on draft and in 750ml bottles for the suggested retail price of $9.99 per bottle (price may vary upon location). The beers from the Game of Thrones series have been wildly popular, so make sure you grab yourself a bottle when you see it in the spring. Prost!
