Tomorrow, March 20, is the first day of spring. If you are in Denver right now, buried under a few inches of snow, this might not seem so apparent – but spring is here.
In LA, we’re happy it is spring and not summer! Nothing better than an 85-degree day to get us out and about, enjoying the rollerblading dudes in Venice, the tattooed tootsies in West Hollywood, and the aging stars with their tops down (convertibles, that is) in Bevery Hills.
But symbolically, how we celebrate the Vernal Equinox has meaning. This examiner was maid of honor at a wedding on this date. Others take second honeymoons. Still others may be more practical and start their spring cleaning tomorrow morning.
Here are a few more ideas to put a spring in your step…
Wending your way through the canyon to get down to the PCH, or just heading straight to Malibu from LA, inching along the coast, is intoxicating. You may take it for granted until you’ve been away a while and realized how lucky you are to be taking in the mighty Pacific. Stop at Starbucks en route to the beach: you may just spot a celeb or three.
Bike up the coast
As you see from this line of well-muscled bikers at Avila Beach, Southern California offers prime pedaling property. Yes, our spring is a tad hot, but head out at sunrise … Bike down to Venice or up to Santa Monica. Bring your SPF 30, a bagged lunch, and plenty of H2O.
Disneyland will bring out the kid in you
Before announcing his retirement, Superbowl 50 champ Peyton Manning took the usual turn and headed to Disneyland. But lucky for you, you don’t need to win a funny ring and million-dollar endorsement deals to jaunt down to Anaheim. It really is a world of laughter there. This examiner still finds The Pirates of the Caribbean a timeless delight.
Carlsbad to destress
Once you’re south of LA you’ll feel a whole lot more human. The In ‘n Out Burgers flash by, the Tom Petty tunes blast, and your cell phone’s conveniently “forgotten” back in Reseda…head to Carlsbad, stay near the beach. Wonderful Mexican food, fro yo shops, surfing, and tie-dyed apparel of all stripes.
Grab your honey and drive up to see the Hollywood sign. Or just hang out in Hollywood and take a ton of selfies. The iconic H sign stands for Happiness for those who wander from home, returning to its welcoming embrace.
The Getty is miraculous, a top tourist attraction as well as a local light. Plus, the views and gardens will bring out the Instagram-bug in you.
Hermosa Beach to chill
Don’t like a stuffy vibe? Head down to Hermosa Beach. You can buy cheap beers and burgers within walking distance of its beautiful pier, über-extended to gently join surf and sand. Neat t-shirts for sale, super volleyball scene.
