Senator Jeff Sessions of Alabama has endorsed 2016 Presidential candidate Donald Trump, according to various media reports, and it is not only because “[t]he American people are not happy with their government,” but also because “… for 30 years, politicians have promised to fix illegal immigration…” and they have not done it, the Senator told the gathered crowd at a Donald Trump rally in Madison, Alabama today.
Lines of Trump supporters began forming early Sunday morning, according to a report from WAFF48 digital staff, and then “quickly” swelled within a matter of hours. Because of the crowds, campaign officials said “… more than 30,000 tickets had been requested from the online registration page set up to handle the event,” the rally’s venue was moved after discussions with city and public safety officials. Before his plane even landed, Trump was tweeting that he had a “big surprise announcement” for the audience.
‘Immigration issues’ for 30 years
That big surprise was none other than Senator Jeff Sessions. He promptly announced his own endorsement of Trump. “He is dedicated to leading this country in an effective way,” Sessions told the crowd. Other remarks made by Sessions included the issue of immigration. “… for 30 years, politicians have promised to fix illegal immigration,” he said. “Have they done it?”
The crowd answered his question, according to another report from Bloomberg. “No,” they yelled. And then Sessions replied that “Donald Trump will do it.”
For his part, Donald Trump told the crowd he was grateful for the Senator’s endorsement, according to the article by Emily Shapiro of ABCnews. “I am deeply honored to have the endorsement of Senator Jeff Sessions, leader of congressional conservatives,” Trump stated. “He has been called the Senate’s indispensable man and the gold standard. He led the fight against the Gang of Eight, against Obama’s trade deal, against Obama’s judges, and for American sovereignty.”
In another statement quoted by Shapiro, Trump further praised Senator Sessions. “He has stood up to special interests as few have. There is no more respected man in Congress and we are closely aligned on many issues, including trade and illegal immigration, and I am proud to consider Jeff Sessions an adviser, friend and ally.”
Nearing ‘the point of no return’
Sessions also believes that are crying out for leadership, according to the ABCnews story. “We are nearing fast the point of no return. The people are hurting. Their wages are declining. Their schools are overburdened. Their hospitals are stretched past the breaking point. Crime is up, and community confidence is down. Americans of all backgrounds and ethnicities, immigrant and US-born, are crying out for leadership that puts their needs first, that takes care of those living and dreaming here today, leadership that understands that there is no constituency other than the American constituency. Mr. Trump is that leader.”
“At this time in my opinion and my best judgment in American history, we need to make America great again,” Sessions told the crowd per writers Kevin Cirilli and Sahil Kapur from the Bloomberg article. “I am pleased to endorse Donald Trump for president of the United States.”
Senator Sessions added another remark, per Cirilli and Kapur. He stated that Trump’s candidacy “… isn’t a campaign, this is a movement. The American people aren’t happy with their government.”
