Koolura and the Mayans was recently released for publication by Solstice Publishing on March 16, 2016. This novel is author Michael Thal’s third installment to the Koolura Series and his fifth published YA novel.
In The Legend of Koolura, Koolura Akopyan received extraordinary psychic powers at birth from an alien device of unknown origin. Koolura and the Mystery of Camp Saddleback, set in the Santa Ynez Mountains, just outside of Santa Barbara, is the second installment in the Koolura Series. It shows Koolura losing her powers and her search for the reason for her power outage. In Koolura and the Mayans we learn more about the alien device and the sentient beings who actually invented it over a thousand years ago on a world light years from Earth.
In Koolura and the Mayans, Koolura and best friend Leila, a deaf teen she met at Camp Saddleback, travel to Oaxaca, Mexico for Koolura’s Dad’s wedding. Prior to the wedding the girls visit Monte Alban, a Mayan archeological site. There they are mysteriously transported back in time to the Mayan era. The girls are imprisoned, used as a sacrificial lamb to a Mayan god, become food fodder for a monstrous snake, and chased by alien teens bent on exploiting Koolura’s gifts. During their thrilling exploits, Koolura and Leila wonder if the Aquarians are planning to take over Earth? And can they stop them in time?
The Legend of Koolura tells the story of a sixth grade Armenian girl and how she obtained the cool powers. She has the ability to dematerialize at will and reappear where she chooses. She can move objects with her mind and can even defy gravity! But will these powers be of any use in stopping a stalker intent on her destruction? The stalker is determined to retrieve Koolura’s unrealized cool powers and hurt any of her friends who get into his way. As the hour approaches for Koolura’s final confrontation with her nemesis, she may finally find vengeance to the man who killed her mother.
In Koolura and the Mystery at Camp Saddleback, Koolura wakes up drained and powerless. Who has stolen her psychic abilities? As Koolura searches for the truth about her power loss, she and the Chumash Girls have to deal with pranksters ruining their cabin and destroying their summer. Campers plan revenge but problems escalate as lives are threatened. Will Koolura and the Chumash Girls unravel the conundrum at Camp Saddleback in time?
Whether you are 9 or 90, Koolura Series readers and professional reviewers presented five star reviews regarding Michael Thal’s novels.
Regarding The Legend of Koolura, Jennifer Leese of the Best Reviews said, “The Legend of Koolura is a wonderfully written book that tells the story of friendships, rejections, and of course, magic powers. Koolura and her story will keep your middle grade reader turning the pages. The dialogue will thrill them and they’ll find themselves thinking about the realistic characters long after they’ve finished reading. I highly recommend The Legend of Koolura and Michael Thal as an author to label as a new favorite.
Red City Review had a lot to say about Koolura and the Mystery at Camp Saddleback. Koolura Akopyan, a recent sixth grade graduate seems like any other “tween.” She likes popular music, movies, gossiping with friends, and spending time with cute boys. But there’s much more to this young Armenian gal than meets the eye–and, when you find out her secrets, you’ll be shocked, surprised, and thoroughly entertained.
Koolura and the Mystery at Camp Saddleback is the second entry in Michael L. Thal’s Koolura series, which finds the familiar protagonist summering at an exclusive camp where mischief and mystery abound. Like any other kid at a new camp, Koolura has to deal with personality conflicts she has with the other girls, as well as with the downright dirty tricks the male campers play on them from nearby “Boys’ Mountain.” But some of those tricks are a little too dangerous and underhanded, and, when their lives are threatened, Koolura and her camp friends realize that someone else is to blame…but who? Using her intelligence, problem-solving skills, and incredible psychic gifts, Koolura slowly but surely gets to the bottom of things and figures out who’s causing the ruckus at camp–and, after all is said and done, she forgives the perpetrator and moves on to further forge friendships created during her compelling coming of age.
Each one of the novels in the Koolura Series stand alone nicely without having to read the other two installments. All Koolura books are available in print on Amazon and Barnes & Noble and as e-books for Kindle readers on Amazon.
