Ted Cruz is not wanted by the former House Speaker John Boehner, and now he is not wanted by the Church of Satan despite Boehner’s comparison of him to “Lucifer in the flesh.” As reported by ABC News on Saturday, Church of Satan president Peter Gilmore stated that the comparison of Cruz to Lucifer is “besmirching the positive, heroic aspects of that character as portrayed by Milton in his epic ‘Paradise Lost.”
A spokesperson/co-founder of the Church of Satan, Lucien Graves, stated that Cruz engages in “clearly deplorable behavior.” Graves also described Boehner’s comments as “thoughtless and ignorant.” Graves also likened Boehner’s comments to “Christians” pushing “Cruz off on Satanists.” Graves clarified, “All that he (Boehner) is trying to say is that Ted Cruz is some type of embodiment of evil.” Graves described that as a “destructive, backward mindset” because, as he put it, Christians blame “the influence of Satan” for things when they go wrong. Graves revealed his opinion on this type of thinking by Christians: “It really prevents you from thinking clearly.”
Gilmore stated that although he and his organization have not endorsed any of the current presidential candidates, that he does not “want” Cruz because he “is everything opposite of what we represent.” One can safely presume, however, that an endorsement from the Church of Satan is not one that Cruz will be seeking any time soon. It would not go over with the Christian evangelists to whom Cruz is trying to appeal in his rigorous, uphill campaign effort against Donald Trump.
Earlier in the week, Cruz appointed Carly Fiorina as his 2016 “running mate.” Of course, for Fiorina to be his actual running mate in the general election, Cruz will have to be successful in forcing a “brokered convention” and then defeating both Trump and Kasich in a second or third convention floor vote. Then again, the mighty California Primary is coming in June and if Cruz can win that state’s 172 delegates, he might just pull off that brokered convention. Cruz can only hope against hope as Fiorina tries to balance the scales in favor of Cruz.
