The Sarasota-Manatee County USBC Bowling Association has released entry blanks for its four major 2016 tournaments, and it’s not too early for prospective entrants to make note of the dates, times and places.
One major change is in store, and that involves running the SMBCA Open and Women’s tournaments simultaneously at the same center (Sarasota Lanes) over the same three weekends (Feb. 27-28, March 5-6 and March 12-13).
The Bill Wenzel Valentine Handicap Mixed Doubles will be held on Sunday, Feb. 14, at AMF Bradenton Lanes, and the 700-Plus Tournament will be conducted on the following Sunday (Feb. 21) at Sarasota Lanes.
Following are capsule summaries of each tournament, with links provided to the official entry blanks.
- BILL WENZEL VALENTINE DOUBLES: The fifth annual competition will begin at 1 p.m. on Feb. 14 at AMF Bradenton, and all teams must consist of one male and one female. Entry fee will be $40 per doubles team, and optional scratch singles — using scores rolled in doubles — will be available, both scratch and handicap (900 percent of 240), at a cost of $10 each. Early entries are encouraged, in part because walk-ins will be charged an additional $5 expense fee per bowler. To access an entry blank, click here.
- 700-PLUS TOURNAMENT: Competition will begin at 1 p.m. on Feb. 21 at Sarasota Lanes, and entry fee will be $22 for scratch and handicap singles, plus $40 into virtual handicap doubles. Scratch singles is open to all SMCBA members who have ever rolled a certified three-game scratch series of 700 or better, while handicap (90% of 240) singles is open to members who haven’t rolled a 700 in the past four years. The top five in scratch singles will enter a stepladder rolloff. Virtual doubles will feature one SMCBA member who has rolled a 700 series and one member who hasn’t done so in the past four years. A player must bowl singles to enter virtual doubles, and multiple doubles entries will be permitted. Walk-ins will be accepted, but an additional $5 fee per bowler will be assessed. - SMCBA OPEN AND WOMEN’S CHAMPIONSHIPS: The 67th annual Open and the 9th annual women’s tournaments will take place simultaneously on the last weekend of February and the first two weekends of March at Sarasota Lanes, with all squad times at 1 p.m. The OPEN TOURNAMENT will be contested in two average categories, as follows: five-player team, Division A (880-over) and Division B (879-under); doubles, A (352-over) and B (351-under); and singles, A (176-over) and B (175-under). Entry fee is $22 per bowler per event, plus optional all-events, both scratch and handicap (90% of 240), at $5 each. Multiple participation is available in team event only, and no more than three individuals who have entered together may bowl more than once. Entry deadline is midnight, Feb. 20, and to check out an entry blank, click here. The WOMEN’S TOURNAMENT will feature a four-player team event contested in one classification, while doubles will be in two average categories (326-over and 325-under) and singles also in two divisions (165-over and 164-under). Entry fee has been set at $22 per bowler per event, plus optional handicap (90% of 240) available at $5. Multiple participation will be permitted in team event only, but no more than two individuals can compete together on more than one team. As with the Open tourney, the entry deadline is Feb. 20, and to view or download an entry blank, click here.
The final frame: John Duley
John Duley of Sarasota, an avid league bowler — primarily at Sarasota Lanes and Sarasota Galaxy (now AMF Gulf Gate) — for more than two decades, died at the age of 73 last week. Born in Washington, D.C., he relocated to Sarasota in 1973, and although he hasn’t bowled in many years, he carried averages as high as 191 in a much-lower-scoring era.
