The San Francisco Symphony (SFS) will welcome the Year of the Monkey on Saturday, February 13, with its Sixteenth Annual Chinese New Year Concert and Celebration. This will follow the usual format for the festivities. At 2 p.m. Davies Symphony Hall will open its doors for a Festival Reception, which serves as a preview bonus for all holding tickets for the concert. The concert itself will begin at 3 p.m.; and, once again, Taiwanese conductor Mei-Ann Chen will take the SFS podium. Following the concert, the celebration will continue with an Imperial Dinner in the Zellerbach Rehearsal Hall. This year that gala event will be chaired by Patricia Lee-Hoffmann.
This year’s concert programming will include a special “sneak preview” event. In partnership with the San Francisco Opera (SFO), one of the guest soloists will be Pureum Jo. She will sing “Petal’s Aria” from Bright Sheng’s latest opera, Dream of the Red Chamber, which will be given its world premiere by SFO this coming September 10. Jo will be making her SFO debut in the role of Bao Yu, the embodiment of the Crimson Pearl Flower that was nurtured with dew from the Divine Stone during the opera’s prologue.
The other guest artist will be Wu Man, who will be soloist in a performance of Zhao Jiping’s second pipa concerto. As usual, there will also be a generous offering of traditional Chinese music. This will include the obligatory Chinese dragon dance, which will featured members of the Loong Mah Sing See Wai dance ensemble.
These New Year festivities will begin at 2 p.m. on Saturday, February 13. Ticket prices for the Festival Reception and concert range from $30 to $74 and may be purchased through the event page for this concert on the SFS Web site. Tickets may also be purchased at the Davies Box Office on Grove Street between Van Ness Avenue and Franklin Street or by calling 415-864-6000.
Tickets for the post-concert Imperial Dinner in the Zellerbach Rehearsal Hall are being sold separately; but the event page for the concert includes a separate hyperlink for dinner tickets. Prices for individual tickets range from $375 to $1000, and they may also be ordered in blocks of ten to reserve an entire table. Those purchasing dinner tickets will also be provided with the tax-deductible amount for each of these rates. These tickets may also be purchased by calling the SFS Volunteer Council at 415-503-5500. The Zellerbach Rehearsal Hall is in the Davies Symphony Hall building, but the entrance is at 300 Franklin Street.
