The SAG Awards 2016 live stream online and TV coverage will be here on Saturday night, bringing out many of the biggest stars in Hollywood for the latest awards event. Screen Actors Guild (SAG) will recognize the top achievements over the past year from both television and film, with stars including Leonardo DiCaprio, Kate Winslet, Jon Hamm and Claire Danes amongst the nominees. A red carpet special event will allow viewers early coverage from California as many of the stars arrive to the event. The 2016 SAG live streaming and televised show will be simulcast from TBS and TNT on Saturday evening, with what many people feel is a more diverse recognition of top entertainment this past year than the Oscars offers.
According to E! Online in their Jan. 30 report, Hollywood isn’t quite as enraged when it comes to the nominees on tonight’s awards show as it is over the Oscar Award contenders. There has been controversy with many actors and actresses upset over the lack of diversity amongst those nominated for the Academy Awards. Tonight’s Screen Actors Guild seems to have given much more recognition, but it also includes a lot more awards including those from television. However, two films are up for the Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture that prominently featured black actors. “Straight Outta Compton” and “Beasts of No Nation” are both being recognized in that category as they’ll face “The Big Short,” “Spotlight” and “Trumbo” for the award.
Only one black actor from film finds themselves among the nominees tonight and that’s Idris Elba for “Beasts of No Nation.” He was not nominated for the Oscars, nor were Will Smith for “Concussion,” or Michael B. Jordan for “Creed.” None of the main black actors from “Straight Outta Compton” were nominated for the Academy Awards either. Over in the television nominees, “Key & Peele” finds itself nominated for the Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series category. Viola Davis of “How to Get Away With Murder” heads up a strong field of contenders for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Drama. “Orange is the New Black” star Uzo Aduba is also among the female noms for Female Actor in a Comedy Series, while Irdis Elba (“Luther”) and Queen Latifah (“Bessie”) are also up for awards for TV movie or miniseries acting.
Should “Beasts of No Nation” or “Straight Outta Compton” take home the movie award or Elba capture the acting win for film, it could force the Academy to take notice. For that matter several wins by African American actors tonight could make a statement that perhaps certain films and performances may have been snubbed by the Academy for their consideration. Tonight’s show might not be a full prediction of what will or should win at the Oscars, but in many people’s opinions, it captures the recognition of diverse actors and films within Hollywood a bit more accurately. It should also be interesting to see what statements are made from those accepting awards on stage tonight or those simply showing up on the red carpet for interviews.
Saturday night’s 2016 SAG Awards coverage starts up as early as 6 p.m. Eastern Time with a red carpet special on E! hosted by Guiliana Ranic and Brad Goreski. TBS will have their own red carpet arrivals show at the same time. The main SAG Awards show begins at 8 p.m. EST with live TV coverage on TBS and TNT at the same time. To watch the Screen Actors Guild Awards live streaming online, cable and satellite customers who are able to log into the TNT Drama website can watch online, as can SlingTV subscribers, depending on their specific channel package.
