Shocking photos have been posted on Facebook of the kill room in Manatee County Animal Services, Florida. The photos show a dog and a cat being killed in the same room where the body of a previously killed dog lies on the floor. These photos are shocking because all humane authorities agree that animals should never be killed in a room where there are other dead animals.
In perhaps the saddest and most shocking photo, Sarge, a black dog with white markings is shown tied to the door. The cat, now killed, is laid out on a metal table, and Kobe, a yellow Lab mix, is now lifeless in a large tub on top of the dead black dog. Three dead animals in the room, and poor Sarge, who must smell the death that permeates the small room, waiting to be killed. One can only imagine the terror and horror Sarge is feeling.
The photos appear to show an astonishing lack of humane attitude toward the innocent animals being killed. In one photo, a yellow Lab mix, Kobe, sniffs at the body of a dead black dog while two women stand talking. One has a bottle in her hands and the other woman stands, hands on hips, watching the chained dog cautiously sniff the body of the dead dog. She is obviously unconcerned about the inhumanity of this act. There is also a wire cage in the room which in a later photo shows a cat inside.
Understandably, people are outraged that those involved with killing the strays and unwanted animals in Manatee County are so unfeeling and uncaring. At least those shown in the photos appear to be. A call to the shelter was met with “We’re not allowed to comment on that.” A call to Nick Azzara, the “Information Outreach Coordinator,” was met with a response of “Will respond with statements this afternoon.” A message was left for Betsy Benac, a commissioner at large in Manatee County. No one there has actually addressed this horror except to allegedly remove the camera from the kill room so that no one will know what happens while animals are being killed. (See linked update article below for the county’s response to the removal of the camera and the release of the photos.)
Feel free to contact those in Manatee County. Please share this article and this information so that the world lets them know that their response is being carefully monitored. This must stop. It’s bad enough to kill animals in shelters. To kill in such a cruel and inhumane manner is outrageous. Please let them know that. The Facebook page with these photos can be found here. Word is that the camera was removed from the “euthanasia” room. Was that so that future atrocities will not be documented? There is also a petition about this that can be found at this link.
