Following in the footsteps of Pete Rose and Paul O’Neill, the Bridgeport Bluefish today announced that Roger Clemens will guest manage the team on Friday, Aug. 5, when the ’Fish host the Long Island Ducks. Clemens will throw out the first pitch and participate in a pre-game meet-and-greet with fans. There will also be a limited-edition Roger Clemens bobblehead giveaway for all season ticket holders, as well as fans who purchase five-game “Bobblehead Mini-Plans.”
Clemens, a 24-year major league veteran, made his debut with the Boston Red Sox in 1984 where he became a fixture for the next 13 seasons. Following his stint in Boston, Clemens joined the Toronto Blue Jays in 1997 where he pitched for two seasons before joining the New York Yankees in 1999 where he won two world championships (in 1999 and 2000). In 2004, he was signed by the Houston Astros, but returned to the Yankees for his final season in 2007. An 11-time All-Star, Clemens earned a major league record seven Cy Young Awards. He also was a member of two World Champion teams in 1999 and 2000 while playing with the Yankees. He is a seven-time ERA leader (’86, ’90-’92, ’97, ’98, ’05), and also led the majors in strikeouts five times (’88, ’91, ’96-’98), and wins four times (’86, ’87, ’97, ’98).
No stranger to the Atlantic League, in 2012, Clemens came out of retirement and signed a contract with the Sugar Land (Tex.) Skeeters, joining his son Koby who was a catcher on the team. Clemens, who was 50 at that time, pitched in two games with the Skeeters, one of them against the Bluefish in a game that was nationally televised on ESPN. In that game, Clemens struck out three batters and allowed just three hits in eight scoreless innings.
“We are thrilled to have someone of such high caliber as Roger Clemens join us at The Ballpark at Harbor Yard,” says Bluefish General Manager Jamie Toole. “We encourage everyone to come out on Aug. 5 and experience this special occasion.”
There will also be a pre-game meet-and-greet with Clemens in which fans will have the opportunity to take photos with Roger and have one item autographed. The meet-and-greet is limited to 150 fans and will begin at 5:30 p.m. Cost is $75 per person, which includes a ticket to the game, and are available by CLICKING HERE, by contacting the Bluefish box office at 203-210-BLUE, or by e-mailing firstname.lastname@example.org.
