Alternative/hard rock singer Dilana and her new all-female backing band Shí will headline a night of rock at Lefty’s Live Music in Des Moines on Tuesday, February 23 at 9 p.m. Carroll, Iowa hard rockers Bad Authority will be opening the show, and Lefty’s will probably add another opener before Tuesday rolls around. Tickets for the show are $8 in advance and $10 on the day of the concert. Tickets may be purchased online through MidwesTix or at the door. This show will be restricted to those 21 or older.
Johannesburg, South Africa native Dilana (born Dilana Jansen van Vuuren) turned to music as an escape at an early age. The singer eventually moved to the Netherlands and started her own band, becoming one of the country’s top draws. Dilana released her first full-length album, Wonderfool, in 2000. After a couple of non-album singles, Dilana tried out for Season 2 of the CBS television series Rock Star. She ended up making it all the way to the finals, eventually finishing as the runner-up to Lukas Rossi to front the rock supergroup Supernova, consisting of Mötley Crüe drummer Tommy Lee, former Metallica bassist Jason Newsted, and former Guns N’ Roses guitarist Gilby Clarke.
In 2009, Dilana released her second album, entitled Inside Out. No Doubt drummer Adrian Young and Mötley Crüe guitarist Mick Mars helped back Dilana on the album. After two #1 singles and another Top 10 single overseas, the singer has since settled in Los Angeles. In 2011, Dilana spent some time as lead singer of L.A. Guns. Back on her own again in 2013, the singer released her third album Beautiful Monster. This month, Dilana released her latest album, Angel Camouflaged, eight songs that the international sensation wrote for the motion picture by the same name. Dilana acted in the indie film as well, winning “Best Actress” awards at two different international film festivals. She also took home the award for “Best Music” at one of the festivals, as well. Dilana has shared the stage for some of the music industry’s biggest names, including Aerosmith, Motorhead, Velvet Revolver, Joe Cocker, Golden Earring, Buckcherry, Fuel, Puddle of Mudd, Saliva, the Bangles, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Kansas, and the Doobie Brothers.
Dilana loves to sing covers, so expect her to throw in a few of those on Tuesday night. From Rage Against the Machine to Cyndi Lauper, Led Zeppelin to Harry Chapin, Nirvana to The Police, and the Cranberries to Johnny Cash, there isn’t much that the gifted 43-year-old can’t sing. You can check out Dilana singing one of her own tunes, the ballad “Loud Silence,” in the nearby video.
