UTSA have added seven players to their football squad, head coach Larry Coker announced on Wednesday afternoon. The Roadrunners added six from Junior College while the other, Brenndan Johnson comes out of Prep School.
Stefan Beard (OL, Navarro JC), Austin Blake-Smith (TE, Ventura JC), Anthony Hickey (LB, Saddleback JC), Les Mauro (LB, Hutchinson CC), Tanner Myers (OL, Coffeyville CC) and Derrick Worthy (CB, Orange Coast JC) all join from the junior college ranks. Johnson joins from the Naval Prep Academy as a Cornerback.
All seven players will be enrolling in the spring semester at UTSA and will be participating in the spring drills. They will be joining the trio of greyshirts and Jesse Ebozue as mid-term enrolees, with the Roadrunners looking to quickly rebuild after a poor 2015 season.
An imposing Offensive Lineman, at 6’5 and 315lbs, Beard comes to the Roadrunners having played all 11 games at Navarro in 2015. In that season the offense managed averages of 43.5 points and 513.6 total yards while he was in the Offensive Line.
That came off a great 2014 as a freshman when Beard managed 10 appearances while the offense was even stronger, recording averages of 52.8 points and 612.3 total yards. That solid season earned Beard a place on the USA Football Under 19 National Team.
Tight-End Blake-Smith joins from Ventura JC in California and will enter as a senior in 2016, coming in fresh off earning first team all-conference honors in 2015. Blake-Smith caught 18 passes for 197 yards and two touchdowns last season.
Hickey, joining as a junior linebacker also comes to UTSA from California having managed 57 tackles, with 8.5 for a loss last season. Hickey comes in fresh from claiming the regional championship in 2015 and moved from the special teams.
Johnson is something of a steal for UTSA as he was originally slated to join navy but the Roadrunners claimed him after his year at Navy Prep. In 2014 he led Midway High School to a 12 win season registering 73 tackles, and joins UTSA as a freshman.
Lineback Maruo comes to the Roadrunners to start his junior season, having appeared in 22 games so far in his Juco career. In 2015 he managed an impressive 85 tackles, 11 coming behind the line of scrimmage, managing 15 tackles in one game.
Offensive Lineman Meyers joins as a junior coming from No. 14 Coffeyville CC, playing all 11 games and earning second team all-conference. Worthy joins as junior cornerback earning first-team all league honors managing 42 tackles, 4.5 for a loss and one sack.
