The New England Revolution preseason is underway in Tucson, Arizona. In the preseason, Revs head coach Jay Heaps mixes veterans, drafted players and trialists into line-ups looking for chemistry, skills and leaders. He already cut Sean Okoli.
In total, the Revolution will play seven preseason matches in February to prepare for the 2016 MLS season. The first three games were played during the initial trip to Arizona and the final four preseason games will be played as part of the Desert Diamond Cup at the Kino Soccer Complex in Tucson, Arizona from Feb. 17-27. This is the fifth consecutive year the Revolution entered the competition and this spring, the Revs battle Real Salt Lake, Sporting Kansas City, and the Houston Dynamo before facing a yet-to-be-determined opponent.
The Revolution opened their 2016 preseason competition on February 3 with a 2-0 shutout versus the San Jose Earthquakes. Kelyn Rowe and Charlie Davies each recorded first half goals for New England. The next day, New England fell 2-1 to FC Dallas, with Steve Neumann scoring the lone goal. On February 6, the Revs concluded the first leg of their preseason schedule by losing 3-2 to the Vancouver Whitecaps. Charlie Davies and Jordan McCrary each recorded a goal for New England.
The Revolution returned to Foxborough on Feb. 10 for cold weather training before returning to Arizona on Valentine’s Day to compete in the Desert Diamond Cup. Today, the Revs tied Real Salt Lake 3-3 in the first game. Unsigned draft pick Michael Gamble scored the go-ahead goal and Davies added a brace and leveled the final score in the second half.
Jeb Brovsky, Dominic Samuel, David Addy, Tyler Rudy and Josh Phillips are Revolution trialists and Femi Hollinger-Janzen is an unsigned draft pick.
The Revs will open the 2016 MLS regular season on Sunday, March 6 when they visit old rival Houston Dynamo at BBVA Compass Stadium. The Revolution then launch their home opener six days later on Saturday, March 12 when they host D.C. United at Gillette Stadium.
