“Triple 9” packs muscle and strong action sequences, two key ingredients to a great action film. If you’re a fan of the genre, the trailers for “Triple 9” quickly caught your attention. But what sealed your interest in taking a trip to the theaters is probably the film’s cast. “Triple 9” stars Casey Affleck, Woody Harrelson, Anthony Mackie, Aaron Paul, Norman Reedus, Kate Winslet, and Chiwetel Ejiofor. “Triple 9” might have what thrill-seekers need, but does that make it worth catching in theaters? Maybe. It all depends on what you’re trying to get from it.
The cast is stellar, but if you’re only watching because one or two of your favorite TV actors star in the movie, don’t. Without giving too much away, “Triple 9” is a blood bath. Several characters will die, some in shocking ways, others you’ll see coming. One particular character is killed off way too early if you ask me. I know several fans will be disappointed. So if the cast is the only reason you’re watching, wait for “Triple 9” to arrive on Blu-Ray.
However, the amazing cast is a big part of what makes “Triple 9” incredibly entertaining. By no means is this movie the next blockbuster hit or worthy of any awards, but since when does a film need to in order to be fun? If you’re hoping to watch “Triple 9” for the adrenaline and adventure, you won’t be disappointed.
“Triple 9” features a world of corrupt cops and heartless mobsters. Expect confusion at first as the movie begins feeling a bit like a sequel to an original that you missed. You’ll still be intrigued and determined to learn what’s going on. Just before the film gets to its halfway mark, you’ll be caught up and even more interested in the outcome and consequences of the character’s actions.
From its opening scene, “Triple 9” wastes no time in bringing on the action, often making us feel like we’re in a video game.
The gang of corrupt cops and ex-special forces crew is lead by Michael Atwood (Ejiofor). Michael’s group is tough and get the job done no matter what, but they get involved with the wrong people.
Winslet’s character is Irina, a Russian mob queen that enlists Michael’s crew to do a job for her, whether they like it or not. Michael and his men have two enemies to look out for — Irina’s mob and the police. The plot hooks you even more when it adds Chris Allen (Casey Affleck), a straight-arrow cop determined to hunt down the mysterious crew of corrupt cops.
Verdict: “Triple 9” is a nice treat for action-seekers searching for thrills and nail-biting tension delivered by a great cast.
“Triple 9” is in theaters now, Friday, February 26.
