Rolling Stones fans still looking for a great stocking stuffer for the holiday season can check out the band’s latest offering from the archives. Titled “From the Vault: Live in Leeds 1982,” the concert film hit shelves on Nov. 20 in multiple formats via Eagle Rock.
“Live in Leeds” was shot during the legendary British rocker’s final concert of their 1982 European Tour, which was held on July 25, 1982 in Leeds, England at Roundhay Park in support of their classic 1981 studio album Tattoo You. It would be the last live tour for seven years as the band began to struggle with major infighting between The Stones’ principal songwriters Mick Jagger and Keith Richards prior to making their triumphant return to the road in 1989 with their massively successful Steel Wheels Tour.
The concert captures the Rock and Roll Hall of Famers at a transformative period in their road career. Though not nearly as lean and raw as back in their early club years, by modern standards the performance is relatively stripped down with The Stones relying on only four backing musicians for support. The show marks the band’s final live performance with band co-founder/road manager/pianist Ian Stewart and also features the talents of Chuck Leavell on keyboards, as well as Gene Barge and the late great Bobby Keys on sax.
Eye-catching production bells and whistles are matched by plenty of sweat equity as the “Satisfaction” hitmakers rock their way through tracks from Tattoo You, including their classic hit “Start Me Up,” as well as “Hang Fire, “Neighbours,” “Black Limousine” and “Little T&A. Of course, the setlist also includes plenty of hits and beloved album tracks like “Angie,” “Brown Sugar,” “Jumpin’ Jack Flash,” “Honky Tonk Women,” “You Can’t Always Get What You Want” and “(I Can’t Get No (Satisfaction).”
Jagger prowls the stage in full 80s pastel fashionwear regalia, busting dance moves and enticing the audience. Richards and fellow guitarist Ronnie Wood interweave guitars and double up on harmony vocals while drummer Charlies Watts and bassist Bill Wyman lay down a rock solid rhythm section throughout the night.
As with all the “From the Vault” concert series, the footage has been fully restored and augmented with a crisp new sound mix by Bob Clearmountain. See below for the full setlist.
“Live in Leeds 1982” is available in multiple formats, including: Blu-ray+2CD, SD Blu-ray+2CD, DVD+2CD and DVD+3LP. For more information, click here.
The Stones are reportedly in the studio laying down tracks for a new studio album this month. They will be back on the road in 2016, beginning with a tour of South America, which will launch Feb. 3, 2016 in Santiago, Chile, at Estadio Nacional.
