Growing up in NYC in the 1980’s, you witness a lot of change; neighborhoods in Brooklyn, Harlem, and Queens have seen significant changes throughout the years mostly for the better. One of these neighborhoods that have made drastic changes is the Lower East Side better known as the LES. In the 80s and 90s, most of the LES was unlivable as drugs overtook the area but now the LES has transformed as one of the best places to not only enjoy nightlife but good food and drinks. The newest addition, Mr. Purple located on top of Hotel Indigo, provides good vibes, drinks, views and food.
The Gerber Group who’s responsible for other such spots as Irvington, Kingside, The Roof, and Whiskey Park to name a few are the architects behind Mr. Purple. Mr. Purple is described as a rooftop bar and restaurant located on the 15th floor of the brand new Hotel Indigo Lower East Side (180 Orchard Street). The indoor and outdoor space designed by the internationally acclaimed firm Crème Design, recreates an artist-loft ambiance. As the hospitality group’s first downtown property, Mr. Purple features a variety of the eclectic neighborhood’s iconic culinary dishes, in addition to Gerber Group’s distinguished bar program. The 3,000 sq. ft. interior space, and extensive bar acts as a focal point with downtown New York as a backdrop visible through a tall glass façade. The loft ambiance is displayed through the use of wood structures; juxtaposed with concrete, metal, free hanging lights, and contemporary wooden furniture. Two terraces complement the interior space; the smaller 750 sq. ft. eastern terrace is perfect for an intimate gathering. The larger terrace located on the west side of the space measures 5,000 sq. ft., and is outfitted with its own swimming pool, bar and variety of seating options including chaise lounges, banquettes, and high top communal tables.
Now that you’re familiar with the space, lets get to know some of the drinks and food option. Right off the bat, the must haves are the Croquettes, which include rotisserie chicken, chorizo and romesco, it is melt in your mouth good. Also the Tuna tartar with avocado, radish, harissa and mezze chips. Now, on to the drinks– the Mr. P Gin & Tonic takes a traditional G&T and flips it using house made lavender, lemongrass and allspice tonic. Another great drink is the LES; it has Jameson black, Appleton rum and a hint of nutmeg (delicious). Other good drinks are the New Fashioned, Elyx Cup, Blood and Sand and for a quick warm up, the Port Authority (Hot Toddy style). The bar menu features an expansive collection of small-batch spirits, regionally brewed craft beers, and universal wines.
Overall, Mr. Purple is great for after work drinks, a quick bite, drinks before the club or the first stop of a date. The menu does not include authentic main courses, but their starter menu is the real deal. I give this spot a 4 out of 5, from their views, drinks and starters; Mr. Purple is a bona fide option in the LES. Mr. Purple is open 7 Days a week; Sun: 11am – 2am, Mon – Tues: 4pm – 2am, Wed: 4pm – 3am, Thurs – Fri: 4pm – 4am, Sat: 11am – 4am.
