It’ll be a homecoming in more than one way.
According to CBS Sports’ Jason La Canfora, former San Francisco 49ers tight end Vernon Davis will sign with the Washington Redskins, reuniting him with the city in which he was born, and the general manager who once drafted him for the Red and Gold. Scot McCloughan, who was hired as Washington’s general manager in 2015, originally drafted Davis with the sixth-overall pick in 2006.
According to the NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, the contract will be for one season. Earlier in March, Davis had reportedly told Josina Anderson of ESPN that he wanted to play for at least four or five more seasons. He is 32 years old.
After 10 seasons with the 49ers, Davis was dealt to the Denver Broncos in November, ultimately returning to Levi’s Stadium in February and winning a Super Bowl championship. During his tenure in the Bay Area, Davis amassed 441 receptions for 5,640 yards and 55 touchdowns. His seven postseason touchdowns ties him for first in league history among tight ends.
His efforts with the Broncos were recorded as minimal at best — Davis caught 20 passes for 201 yards in nine games with the Broncos, but none during the final two weeks of the regular season, or in the postseason. Davis arguably had his best season in 2013, when he recorded 52 receptions for 850 yards and tied a career-best 13 touchdowns. His regression began in 2014, when he caught just 26 passes for 245 yards. He followed that up with even lower numbers in 2015, before being traded, Davis has tallied just 18 catches.
In Washington, he will join a tight end group featuring Jordan Reed, former 49er Derek Carrier and Logan Paulsen. Additionally, free agent wide receiver Anquan Boldin, who spent his last three seasons with the 49ers, recently met with the Redskins, assumingly to discuss a possible contract. Throwing to him will be quarterback Kirk Cousins, who led the NFL in completion percentage last season.
