Record Store Day 2016 is this Saturday (April 16) and independent stores all over the country, and the world, will be celebrating. Here in New York, there will be numerous live music and events going on across the state to go with the exclusive music releases.
Created in 2007, Record Store Day is a celebration of independent record stores and the relationship between artists and fans. For one day only, stores have exclusive vinyl releases from top artists. Some of this year’s special releases include a rerelease of David Bowie’s Man Who Sold the World, two compilations of David Bowie singles, the next installment in the Side by Side series, a rerelease of the Sex Pistols’ Never Mind the Bollocks with inverse colors, a Joe Strummer 12’’ with never before seen artwork, a series of 7’’ singles showing solidarity with French record stores called Disquaire Day and Vitamin String Quartet playing the music of Daft Punk, among hundreds of others.
Earlier this year, Metallica was named the 2016 Record Store Day ambassadors, the first time a group has been given this honor. In a statement on the Record Store Day website, bassist Lars Ulrich said about the format, “As music becomes available either through only the internet or in gigantic airport-size retail stores, it is more important than ever – actually vital – that all us fanatics continue to bring to light the importance of records, and to support to the maximum of our abilities the independent record store outlet.” The band will be releasing a live album from a show they played at Le Bataclan in 2003 for the occasion.
Stores all over the state will be celebrating the event. From live music and comedy events to record store crawls and more, here are a few events going on across New York for Record Store Day 2016.
