The 22nd annual Screen Actors Guild Awards took place on Jan. 30, 2016, at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles. Here is what this Screen Actors Guild Award winner said backstage in the Screen Actors Guild Awards press room.
Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Miniseries or Television Movie
What message do you have for the next U.S. President?
“Dear next president, please continue to have some damn sense. Do what’s right for the damn people. Climate change is a real thing.” I hope our next president uses his or her wisdom before speaking and acting to make the right decisions that are best for us as Americans as well as the world. That’s all I can say. Get on your knees at night and pray.
There’s been so much diversity in TV. What do you think it will take to have that happen in film?
I think some of it was already happening, but the public has to continue to demand that. I think we are in a capitalist society, so hopefully supply and demand will kick back in. I don’t know what happened to that, but it used to make pretty darned good sense. So hopefully, our business will supply the demand that people are asking for. The people want it. Give it to the people.
That’s what we’re here to make movies for — not for ourselves or one segment of the population, but really, for everyone. I hope we wake up and realize that the old way of doing things is the old way of doing things. It’s OK to evolve and change and grow. Growth is important and paramount. Change is inevitable. Might as well wrap your mind around it, and let’s go.
What does an actress mean to you?
It means I can talk to this statue as if it’s real and create my own story, as if it were a Barbie. No, being an actor to me is wonderful because it allows me to live and breathe other people that I may not normally be in my own life. It allows me to remove myself from things and jump into another entire character. It’s fun.
To get people emotionally involved in a story is one of the most wonderful things to do. To entertain people is a wonderful thing to be able to do. And to inspire people who are watching. I feel very blessed to be able to do what I do for a living.
